Student Chapters at the Western Regional Conference
 INFORMS staff would like to thank the outstanding student chapters at Arizona State University and the University of Arizona for their contribution to the Western Regional Conference, held at ASU April 24-25. Led by Dr. John Fowler and Dr. Muhong Zhang at ASU, and by Dr. Young-Jun Son at UA, many student volunteers, both chapter officers and members, worked to make this conference a success. Special thanks to Adrian Ramirez, President of the ASU chapter, for coordinating the student volunteers on-site. |
Undergraduate Capstone Project Winners
At the INFORMS Western Regional Conference, held in April, student teams presented papers in the "Best Undergraduate Capstone Project."
In first place was the team from the United States Air Force Academy, with their paper, "Fighter Basing Analysis for Continental U.S. Protection." Team members were Cadet David Ocampo, Cadet Philip Cunningham, and Cadet Michael Peterson. Their faculty advisor was Lieutenant Colonel Maureen Borgia.
In second place was the team from National University, including members Daniel Hathaway, Art Saldana, Daryl Smith, Kyle Downing, and faculty advisor Albert Cruz.

OR/MS Teachers - Nominate Your Favorite Classroom Text
INFORMS Transactions on Education is finalizing a list of classroom texts at the beginning undergraduate or master's level to include in a comparison and review. Two categories being considered are 1) management science texts oriented for a business school and 2) operations research texts oriented for an engineering or mathematics program. Decision Analysis Journal Review
In accordance with INFORMS policy and procedures, the INFORMS VP for Publications, Terry Harrison, has appointed a committee to review the Decision Analysis journal and consider the reappointment of Robin Keller as editor-in-chief for a second three-year term. Robin has provided a report on the journal, and the committee will conduct a survey as part of the review process. The committee includes Greg Parnell (United States Military Academy and Committee Chair); Manel Baucells (IESE Business School, Barcelona); Robin Dillon-Merrill (Georgetown University); Jim Felli (Eli Lilly and Company); Warren Powell (Princeton University and INFORMS Publications Committee representative); and Candita Gerzevitz (ex officio, liaison from the INFORMS office). The final report is due to INFORMS on August 1, 2009.

Organization Science Call for Nominations for Editor-in-Chief
The second and final term of Linda Argote as editor-in-chief of the INFORMS journal Organization Science expires on December 31, 2009. Consistent with the policies of INFORMS, the president has appointed a committee to conduct a full search for a new editor-in-chief. The committee intends to propose a candidate for approval by the INFORMS Board of Directors by July 15, 2009.

INFORMS Transactions on Education Implements ScholarOne Manuscripts System
On May 15, INFORMS Transactions on Education (ITE) became the latest INFORMS journal to implement a ScholarOne Manuscripts (formerly known as Manuscript Central) system to facilitate online peer review and tracking of submitted manuscripts. This system will enable ITE to accelerate the review process and reduce time to decisions; standardize the format of and information provided in reviews; reduce the time between manuscript acceptance and publication; eliminate paper distribution costs; facilitate greater participation in the journal throughout the worldwide OR/MS education community; and simplify the collection of the data used to monitor and evaluate the journal's performance. ITE Special Issue on Teaching Service and Retail Operations Management
INFORMS Transactions on Education (ITE) will publish a special issue on teaching service and retail operations management at the end of 2009. This special issue seeks to highlight advances in teaching service operations management and retail operations management. The objective of this special issue is to provide a forum in which course materials and effective teaching practices within each topic can be exchanged. OMEGA RHO International Honor Society of INFORMS New Website
OMEGA RHO, the International Honor Society for Operations Research and Management Science since 1973 and formally a part of INFORMS since 1998, has launched a new website. The url is unchanged at http://omegarho.informs.org and is easily accessible from the INFORMS home page by clicking on "Communities". Among the information on the website are directions for starting a new chapter, help in maintaining an existing chapter, and information about all future and past Distinguished Lectures. If your university or college has programs in operations research and/or management science and does not have a chapter of OMEGA RHO, it is quite easy to include one as part of your offerings.
