Discoveries and Breakthroughs Inside Science: JIT Disasters, Rubber Roads
This month brings a dozen new TV science stories from Discoveries and Breakthroughs Inside Science for local news.
Just in Time Disaster Training Engineering students created a specially designed disaster training center that simulates a building collapse--a pile of carefully placed rubble.
Rubberized Roads Acoustical engineers discovered that coating concrete roads with a layer of rubber reduces the noise produced from car tires rolling over it.
From Forensic to Fashion Computer scientists designed a software program that can accurately evaluate a person's height, as well as determine gender, weight, chest, and waist size from an image of a person in baggy or bulky clothing.

Searchable Databases Updated on IOL
The INFORMS Conference Presentation Database now has 54,388 records based on information on presentations at ORSA/TIMS and INFORMS meetings since 1990. The Annual Comprehensive Index (ACI) has 39,382 entries. INFORMS has converted both databases to a different format, PHP/MySQL, to allow for faster searching. The Conference Presentation Database will be updated as future conferences conclude and is now current through the 2008 INFORMS Annual Meeting held in Washington, D.C. |
WORMS Award: Call for Nominations
The committee for the WORMS Award for the Advancement of Women in OR/MS is now accepting nominations.This award celebrates and recognizes a person who has contributed significantly to the advancement and recognition of women in the field of operations research and the management sciences. Each nominee will be considered based on his or her history of successfully promoting the professional development, success, and recognition of women in OR/MS. All nominations must be submitted via e-mail to the Award Committee Chair, Anna Nagurney ( nagurney@gbfin.umass.edu), by July 1, 2009. We are pleased to reintroduce a member benefit -- the INFORMS Internship Service. This free service helps match organizations that have available paid or unpaid OR/MS internships with students who are looking for an internship experience. If you have an internship available at your organization, we invite you to list it with us so we may make our student population aware. It is fast and easy to list an internship with INFORMS. Simply go here, click on "Add an internship," and complete the form provided. You may specify degree required, geographic location, and OR/MS field your internship covers so that applicants can see exactly what you are looking for. INFORMS will continually promote all available internships in our database to our student member community, which is about 2,500 strong.

INFORMS invites you to take a look at the latest issue of Analytics, our digital magazine devoted to bringing stories to the rest of the world about how data, modeling, and mathematical analysis are used to drive better business decisions. Call for Papers, Interfaces Special Issue - Humanitarian Applications: Doing Good with Good OR. Deadline Extended
Interfaces has announced a special issue devoted to O.R. and humanitarian applications. This special issue focuses on O.R. models and methods in practice in relation to the "Doing Good with Good OR" efforts pioneered by INFORMS Past President Cynthia Barnhart. Examples of research topics include planning and response to large-scale disease outbreaks, such as pandemic influenza, improved logistics for reaching earthquake victims, implementation of new energy-market structures to enable greater distribution, solutions for fair and sustainable water allocation, more accurate prediction of hurricane paths and devastation, prevention of terrorist attacks through algorithmic identification of perpetrators, and reduction of poverty through new market mechanisms. Appropriate papers include descriptions of practice and implementation of OR/MS in industry, government, nongovernmental organizations, and education.

He left us too soon but his work lives on. In Memoriam, Thomas E. Caywood
INFORMS mourns the loss of Dr. Thomas E. Caywood, 89, who served as president of ORSA in 1969, received the Kimball Award, and was named an INFORMS Fellow Award recipient. Dr. Caywood, of Atlanta, Georgia, died peacefully in his sleep Friday, December 19, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary E. Caywood; three daughters, Dr. Ann Caywood of Peoria, Arizona, M. Beth Caywood of Winder, Georgia, Dr. KayDee Caywood of Glendale, California; and two grandsons. According to his wishes, his body was donated to the Emory University School of Medicine.
Dr. Caywood was a resident of Flossmoor, Illinois for 57 years. After being diagnosed with Alzheimer's, he and his wife moved to the Atlanta area in April of 2008 to be near their daughter Beth. His struggle with Alzheimer's was short and without many of the complications associated with the disease process.
