U.S. Defense Science Board Endorses O.R. in Intelligence
If some have found O.R. a best-kept secret, this has never been the case in the military. Witness an impressive endorsement of Ops Research, as military folks say, from the U.S. Defense Science Board Advisory Group on Defense Intelligence Task Force. The task force examined the commitment of decision makers to the use of O.R. and the extent to which these resources reflect the application of standard O.R. processes and practices in the intelligence community. The task force gave examples from several private-sector O.R. application models and recent and historical uses of O.R. in support of national security requirements. The gist is praise for the current use of O.R. and a call for important improvements. The document is unclassified and appears here . |

If you are interested in contributing an article, please let us know. Help us get the good word out about the OR/MS and analytics profession by forwarding articles or the entire magazine to colleagues and friends. Spotlight on INFORMS Communities - INFORMS Section on Public Programs, Service and Needs
How can INFORMS' newest section also be one of its oldest? That's what happens when a decades-old section merges with two of the hottest new special-interest communities in the field.
From the Public Programs and Processes Section, we get great history, with quality work on theory and applications, including public safety, homeland security, and public health. From the Humanitarian Applications group, we get great current activity, with a special issue of Interfaces in the works, a special conference just completed, and wall-to-wall sessions at the last INFORMS meeting. From the community on O.R. in Public Service, we get a great stretch in scope - not just O.R. on public service but O.R. as public service - from colleagues who want to deploy their skills to make sure that Katrina-like losses never happen again.
If any of this sounds like something you are doing or would like to do, contact one of our officers. Information can be found by visiting our website at http://ppsn.section.informs.org. To become a member of SPPSN, visit the INFORMS website at www.informs.org and click on "Join INFORMS." |
