Spotlight on INFORMS Communities - Transportation and Logistics
If you're one of the many INFORMS members who specializes in transportation, this society is for you.The TSL Society provides INFORMS members with a sustained, specialized focus on these topics, including current and potential problems and contributions to their solution; and supports efforts to extend, unify and integrate related branches of knowledge and practice. TSL encourages the education of students and the continuing education of practitioners. The society is the editorial home of one of INFORMS' flagship journals, Transportation Science. The INFORMS Transportation Science and Logistics (TSL) Society was formed in 2004 with the merger of the Transportation Science and Logistics Sections. The Aviation Applications Section affiliated with the society in 2008. The society includes, in addition to the Aviations Applications Section, four special interest groups: Freight Transportation and Logistics, Urban Transportation Planning and Modeling, Facility Logistics and Intelligent Transportation Systems. Collectively, the Aviation Applications Section and the Transportation Science and Logistics Society include just under a thousand members, almost half of whom are students. If you're not a member, you can become one. For more information, see our website at www.informs.org/site/tsl.To become a TSL member, go to www.informs.org and click on "Join INFORMS." |

Case-Assigning Regions to Sales Representatives at Pfizer Turkey by Köksalan and Batun
Many pharmaceutical products are marketed to medical doctors by sales representatives (SRs). Designing sales territories is an important problem in the pharmaceutical sector. This case study is based on a real-life sales territory construction problem of Pfizer Turkey, one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in that nation. The case improves students' skills of formulating and solving integer programs, exploring the solution space and the trade-offs between different criteria and generating a set of promising solutions.
Using Digital Video Technology to Reduce Communication Apprehension in Business Education by Leeds and Maurer
Several studies have shown that communication apprehension (CA) plays a significant role in reducing the effectiveness of oral communication in business settings. In this latest study, digital video was used as a multimedia replacement for in-class oral presentations. Results show that the treatment is associated with a reduction in CA. A feedback survey suggests that participants in the treatment group spent more time practicing oral communication skills and felt the treatment prepared them to present again.
Puzzle-Tennis Mixed Doubles by Chlond
The author presents a puzzling mixed-doubles tennis match scheduling problem. In this problem 20 tennis players (10 men and 10 women) wish to play several rounds of mixed doubles. Each round consists of five matches where each match has a man and a woman on each side. No player may oppose the same player more than once and no player may partner with the same player more than once. However, a player may partner someone in one round and oppose that person in another round. The puzzling question is, What is the maximum number of rounds that may be played without violating these conditions?
