INFORMS Community on Legal Affairs

Legal affairsAre you interested in forming a new INFORMS community on legal affairs? Recent changes in the legal system will result in more opportunities for O.R. analysts. For example, those involved in litigation can demand access to an opponent's system for data mining purposes - this is called electronic discovery. In addition, courts are receptive to arguments about what effect a particular rule would have on people's behavior and on the economy - after developing evidence, analysts can use game theory and other O.R. methods to provide insight into the merits of a course of action being considered by the courts. If you agree that there should be a section with a focus on use of operations research in the legal system, contact INFORMS member Mark Lutz at mlutz@live.com.

New Computing Society Glossary

INFORMS veteran Harvey Greenberg has completed a new version of Myths and Counter Examples in Mathematical Programming, which is part of the ICS's Mathematical Programming Glossary. The project has grown into an impressive collection that touches most of O.R. Visit the latest version at http://computing.society.informs.org/glossary.php.
Operations Research Special Issue on Health Care

Operations ResearchThe current issue of Operations Research is a special issue devoted to health-care policy, treatment optimization, and operations management that has already received attention in Newsweek.
Among the studies are

Algorithmic Predictions of Health-Care Costs
by Bertsimas, Bjarnadottir, Kane, Kryder, Pandey, Vempala, and Wang

The predictive power of clinical claims data became a topic of intense research in the 1980s. In this paper, the authors utilize modern data-mining methods to analyze claims data from more than 800,000 members in order to provide more accurate predictions of health-care costs.

Robust Management of Motion Uncertainty in Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy
by Bortfeld, Chan, Trofimov, and Tsitsiklis

The presence of uncertainty in radiation therapy has the potential to compromise the effectiveness of a cancer treatment. In this paper, the authors present a robust optimization model to mitigate the negative consequences of breathing motion uncertainty in the treatment of lung tumors. They demonstrate that it is possible to guarantee a sufficient level of dose to the tumor across a range of uncertain scenarios, while negligibly increasing dosage to healthy tissue.

Providing Timely Access to Medical Care: A Queueing Model
by Green and Savin

Many primary care practices have been pressured by managed care companies and lower compensation levels to take on more patients. As a result, many physicians have been wrestling with chronically long backlogs for appointments This research focuses on the size of a patient population panel that can be reasonably handled with a given supply of physician appointment time.
