Love is a monsoon.
The mon soon stands for everything valuable in life. The monsoon is the force of life. The monsoon gives life promise and hope. And the monsoon is the very thing that throws life to greatest danger. With the monsoon, we flourish. With the monsoon, we drown.
The monsoon is the gift that brings forth birth, spring and abundance. But with the monsoon comes disease, and the gravest threats to existence.
The monsoon embodies everything in your life that you both want and fear. The very thing that nurtures you is the thing that may well consume you. There is a monsoon outside, and a monsoon inside. Our deepest desires--our inner monsoon--what we want most, and perhaps what we fear most. Love is a monsoon. It truly does drench you, and it may very well consume you. To love so deeply, to care so fully, is to risk everything.
We welcomed our latest monsoon, our son--Oliver Silver Mazé, into our lives on 10.12.11. His coming was much more sane than Madeleine's. He arrived at nearly 40 weeks to the day, had a good birth weight, etc. He smiled right away. A monsoon of love in his eyes and on his face. I am happy to say that we are way less panicked, and have consequentially been able to experience more sweetness and joy than ever before, in these early weeks and months of life. I am told this is typical, right? We've done this before, and we are thankfully not freaked out by every little thing.
Big Sister Madeleine has been super about it all. As of this fall, Madeleine started nursery school, and we are all joyfully embracing this next phase of her life and the growth of our family. Although Madeleine was initially disappointed that her tiny brother wasn't a girl, she has taken to big sisterhood in all the best ways. She is extremely gentle, kind and loving with her baby. She passes us up on her way in and out the door to greet and kiss him. She keeps asking when he will grow bigger so he can play with her. She is even excited to share her toys. Tracy and Oliver have been home in Los Angeles doing what you would expect. Oliver eats and sleeps and is tended to by his mommy. He is gaining weight very well, and I am anticipating needing another baby seat on my Xtracycle soon. Tracy is healthy and happily in love with her son.
For my part, the storm of my schedule has swept me away from my family for almost half of Oliver's life so far. I am in the final days of a near 6 week teaching tour in Asia. I have taught programs in Fiji (retreat), Singapore (3-day intermediate intensive), Jakarta (Part I Immersion), Kuala Lumpur (3-day intermediate intensive), Osaka (workshops) and Tokyo (Part III Immersion). Somehow my company still does not offer paid paternity leave, so I am traveling and teaching more than ever, and despite the bitter pain of being away from the monsoon of love at home, I am powerfully grateful for my students and for yoga.
This year, I have been held in the embrace of open-hearted students all over the world. YogaGlo continues to bring me to my students in all corners of the world, and this year I also feel as if I have touched most of the globe in person. It has been a truly incredible year of traveling and teaching; and the year is ending with this trip. I am finishing on a high note with Part 3 Immersion in Japan, at Spanda Yoga Studio, Tokyo--check out pics on Facebook--and see the community page of my Website. I am deeply honored to be teaching in Japan for my first time, and I look forward to returning three times next year. There is amazing studentship here, as in so many places. I find myself feeling very lucky.
I will finish this program on Christmas afternoon in order to fly home to be with my family on Christmas morning! Crossing the date line is amusing...I will teach in Tucson with Darren Rhodes and Christina Sell over New Year's weekend. Our 2nd annual advanced intensive holds a benchmark for the most advanced and focused event in my year (if you are anxious to join, there may be a spot or two that have opened up in the program). It truly is a crucible of transformation, and has become a standard against which I measure other programs that I offer. Teaching with, practicing and sharing the company of Christina and Darren ALWAYS inspires and refuels me.
In the coming year, I am excited for all of us as the flood of yoga carries us into new territory and sends us all in new directions. For myself, next year's highlights include; Good to Great, a teacher development and group mentorship program for Anusara Inspired and Certified teac hers, Anusara Immersions in Tokyo, Osaka, and Rome, Alaska, Los Angeles and elsewhere in the US. One week long, 50 hour Teacher Training in gorgeous Flagstaff, Arizona. Deets are up on my Website, or coming soon. Email us if you have questions. There will be more YogaGlo, more travel, more laughter, more love and less sleep. And, of course, there will be much further inquiry into that force that is my own inner monsoon.
I wish you each a monsoon of love, a torrent of grace, good heath, joy, and the fullness of what you most deeply desire. Happy new year!
Saprema, Noah
