Chapter Meeting

Introduction to Smartphone Application Development for Technical Communicators

Help your mobile team improve your apps by understanding the basics of mobile application creation.

Join us on Tuesday, January 18, for our first chapter meeting of 2011. We will discuss the basics of development for iPhone/iPad and Android. The concepts we plan to cover can be generalized to other mobile platforms. The topics are technical in nature but do not require any experience with programming.

We will explore two hot topics in mobile development: user interface text and content delivery. When writing for the user interface, the reduced screen real estate of mobile devices puts a great weight on the words and phrases appearing in the apps. The first word that comes to mind is rarely the best word. Usability techniques can help you choose the perfect word for every situation and make your app that much easier to use. By understanding how application creation is done, you can do much of the design work on your own without the need for programming resources.

A Special Announcement from STC Chicago Vice President and Competition Committee Co-Chair, Elizabeth Burke...

STC Chicago 2010-2011 Technical Communication Competition

The 2010-2011 competition judges were very busy for the past two months reviewing and discussing the entries in this year's competition. The teams were tasked with a new approach and new judging forms for this year's competition and the evaluations should offer our submitters better insight into how judges evaluate the entries.

Our competition teams are meeting on Saturday, January 8th to finalize reviews and submit recommendations for awards. The competition committee will notify submitters of the results in a timely manner as we understand the anticipation and excitement that goes along with submitting your work.

Competition awards will be presented at this year's Recognition Banquet on Thursday, March 10th. Please mark the date on your calendars so that you can join us in acknowledging our competition award winners along with others who will be recognized and honored for contributions to our organization and profession.
