September 4: Thursdays @ STC Chicago

Meet with STC Chicago members for lunch or dinner on Thursday, September 4. This month, you'll have an opportunity to network with industry professionals in Lincolnshire, Wheeling, Schaumburg, Chicago and two Downers Grove locations. Our downtown Chicago get-together has been so well attended that we've added a new time and new (quieter!) locations. W
alk-ins are welcome, but RSVPs are recommended. To learn more about these networking opportunities, see Thursdays.

September 18: STC Chicago Monthly Meeting

Writing and Intellectual Property Rights: Respecting Others' and Guarding Your Own

Join us on September 18 for our next meeting and hear our speaker, Chicago patent attorney Bob Brill, discuss intellectual property law and its impact on how we create and manage content in a digital age. Attend this meeting and learn about the concept of "fair use" and how it affects the work we do as technical communicators. If your job requires you to use the Internet to create, distribute and exchange information, you won't want to miss this event.

Meeting Location: Carleton Hotel, 1110 Pleasant Street, Oak Park, Illinois (Google Map

Call for Annual Chapter Competition Judges | New This Year: Remote Judging

Have you wanted to participate as a judge, but just weren't able to make it to our judging venues? This year, we will be expanding our Remote Judging teams. Remote judges will have the same responsibilities as on-site judges but will coordinate with their teammates completely via email and conference calls. Entries will be mailed to the remote judges, and the judges will be responsible for mailing the entries along with their judge's comments back to the committee in a timely fashion.

The Central Iowa and Wisconsin chapters are participating in our chapter competition, so there should be many new and unique entries! If interested in volunteering as a judge, please contact Dan Dornbrook (vicepresident@stc-chicago.org).

Check the STC Chicago website soon for complete competition information, including entry forms and judging materials.

September 2008 Photo Contest

Murals are an important part of the public art scene here in Chicago. This month's photo, featured above, is of a prominent mural located in the city's New East Side. Can you identify the intersection where the mural can be found? And don't try asking STC Chicago member Kelly Oja, who donated the photo from his personal collection. He's sworn to secrecy!

The first person to email contest@stc-chicago.org with the correct answer will receive an STC tote bag compliments of STC Chicago.

Contestants are eligible to win only one prize within any one 12-month period. We will notify the winner via email and post the winner's name on our website. The correct answer will be posted on our blog.
