Apply through Oct. 1 to present at Early Stage Symposium

The producers of the Wisconsin Early Stage Symposium are looking for cutting-edge companies from Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest to present to investors at the Nov. 13-14 conference at Madison's Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center.

The annual conference gives selected companies the opportunity to make presentations and meet with investors. For many firms, participation in the conference has been a key factor for significant business growth. For more information and to register for the conference, go to http://www.wisearlystage.com/.

The deadline to apply to present is 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, 2012.

Like the 2011 conference, this year's conference is open to early stage companies representing an array of industries: biotechnology, biofuels and products, "cleantech," advanced manufacturing, information technology, nanotechnology and business services. There are two separate presentation levels at the Early Stage Symposium: the Wisconsin Angel Network Investors' Track and the Elevator Pitch Olympics.

Upcoming WIN events cover range of topics

Join us for a line-up of Wisconsin Innovation Network events in the coming weeks. The Sept. 25 WIN-Madison meeting will feature tech companies that have made recent splashes in national competitions. The Sept. 26 WIN-Northeast meeting in Green Bay will feature representatives of two angel groups active in northeast Wisconsin, Angels on the Water and the NEW Fund. The Oct. 23 WIN-Madison meeting will highlight technology systems that are driving some of today's major financial institutions. The Oct. 25 WIN-Milwaukee meeting is a special evening event, "The Science of Beer," to be hosted at MillerCoors Brewing in Milwaukee. The Nov. 8 WIN-Milwaukee event will feature Tim Sullivan, the former Bucyrus-Erie CEO who recently authored a much-anticipated report on workforce development. Inside Wisconsin columns tackle state, tech issues

Tech Council President Tom Still shares insights on technology, the economy and politics through "Inside Wisconsin." Here are some recent columns:

Town and gown: Industry alliances on campus can drive growth, solve problems At a library that has served the UW-Madison School of Medicine almost since its birth more than 100 years ago, GE Healthcare executives and university researchers, practitioners and students gathered last week to unveil a $32.9-million partnership.

Food industry's impact goes beyond 'organic' paradigm A study released last week by scientists at Stanford University concluded there's not much difference, in terms of nutritional value, between conventionally grown foods and those of the organic variety.

Finding Wisconsin is becoming easier for investors, technology scouts One of my favorite pop quizzes for people outside Wisconsin, especially those who understand the tech-based economy, is to ask them to name the nation's top five academic research universities. The answers invariably include the likes of Stanford, Yale and Harvard, but rarely does anyone outside the Midwest guess that UW-Madison is perennially on the list.

Early-stage capital program to enter state budget debate The history of the Wisconsin Legislature suggests that most big ideas take more than one floor session to pass. From how the state pays for public schools to welfare reform, and from school vouchers to health care for low-income families, major initiatives rarely pass by acclamation in the Capitol.

Wisconsin's maturing biotech economy means storms can be weathered Some of the 130 or so workers at Madison's Hologic Inc. facility were among the first employees of Third Wave Technologies, which was born in the mid-1990s in the labs of UW-Madison and grew so quickly that its stock was listed on the NASDAQ exchange by 2001.

UWM pairings with industry have paid off On his second day at work as dean of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee College of Engineering in 2008, Mike Lovell met with leaders of Johnson Controls Inc. Power Solutions group. It was time well spent - even if Wisconsin newcomer Lovell had barely unpacked.

Akin's remarks on rape and pregnancy reveal science gap in public life U.S. Rep. Todd Akin has decided to remain in the Republican primary race for U.S. Senate in Missouri. In the meantime, can someone at least kick him off the House Science Committee?

Launch of The Art Commission offers right mix of experience in new setting Toni Sikes is hardly your wet-behind-the-ears entrepreneur. Her startup credentials include several online businesses tied to the arts, she's a co-founder of Calumet Venture Fund and she's raised tens of millions in private equity capital for her endeavors over time.

Seely on science: Exploring the human side of nanotechnology In today's fast-moving technological world, some words can quickly lose their meaning. Take the word "nanotechnology," for example.
