DFI issues small business advisory on crowdfunding
| |
The Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions has issued an advisory for small businesses and entrepreneurs seeking to raise investment capital through crowdfunding. Crowdfunding is an online money-raising strategy that began in the arts and non-profit sectors.
Through the federal Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act, small businesses and entrepreneurs will be able to tap into the "crowd" in search of investments to finance their business ventures. The JOBS Act, which was signed into law in April, directs the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to adopt rules within 270 days to implement a new exemption to allow entrepreneurs and small businesses to offer investments in their ventures through crowdfunding. Other topics covered in the advisory include the importance of choosing a proper broker or funding portal to assist with your crowdfunding offering, and a reminder that state and federal laws provide additional methods for companies to raise money from a limited number of investors with little or no cost. The full advisory may be found on DFI's website at www.wdfi.org/fi/securities.

Inside Wisconsin columns tackle state, tech issues |
|
Tech Council President Tom Still shares insights on technology, the economy and politics through "Inside Wisconsin." Here are some recent columns:
Time to get creative on jobs The good news for Wisconsin's economy: It added nearly 20,000 jobs in 2011, according to the now-official figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The not-so-good news: Wisconsin still ranked behind 40 other states when it came to creating jobs.
Supreme Court ruling or no, health care reform well underway in America The U.S. Supreme Court's July 28 decision to uphold the core of the Affordable Care Act, the full name for President Obama's health care plan, didn't end the political debate over government's role in health care. In fact, the ruling has already become a defining issue in the fall elections.
Wisconsin can play a role in 'reinventing' the Internet The need to essentially re-invent the Internet is behind a trend called "software defined networking," or Open Flow, that has commanded the attention of the industry's biggest names, academic researchers, major telecommunication providers and the White House itself.
As pace of cancer drug approval quickens, Wisconsin companies stand to benefit Society is ever-so-slowly winning its war against cancer. That's due in part to better health habits, such as not smoking, but it's also because diagnostic and therapeutic technologies are advancing at an accelerated pace. |

________________________________________________________________________
Dear Reader:
A core role of the Wisconsin Technology Council is to serve as a policy adviser to the governor, the Legislature and other arms of state government. Our board of directors, which includes leaders from the tech, business, education and investment communities, helps to fulfill those duties through the publication of our biennial "white papers." At the board July 10 meeting at Logistics Health Inc. in La Crosse, the process of forging those recommendations continued. Publication of our report is expected by Labor Day. Our board's input is vital, of course, but so are the contributions of WIN members, who provide ideas and suggestions on a regular basis. We look forward to these papers serving as a conversation point during the fall election campaigns and as a touchstone for the Legislature when it returns to Madison for its 2013 session.
Sincerely,
Tom Still, president
