Nearly 250 entries in 2012 Governor's Biz Plan Contest

Entrepreneurs from 81 communities across Wisconsin submitted 248 entries in the ninth annual Wisconsin Governor's Business Plan Contest, contest organizers announced Monday.

Those entries included 83 in the contest's information technology category, 78 in business services, 47 in advanced manufacturing and 40 in life sciences. The total of 248 entries is up from 223 in 2011. Also, those 248 entries represent 241 individuals - the second highest total in the contest's history.

About 50 plans will move to the contest's second round in late February.

"Wisconsin entrepreneurs have once again demonstrated they have strong ideas and a willingness to undertake the hard work of transforming those ideas into businesses," said Mark Bugher, chairman of the Wisconsin Technology Council. The Tech Council produces the annual contest.   To learn more, visit www.govsbizplancontest.com.

Inside Wisconsin columns tackle state, tech issues

Tech Council President Tom Still shares insights on technology, the economy and politics through "Inside Wisconsin." Here are some recent columns:

Even in a manufacturing state, a diverse economy is vital for job creation In his State of the Union address, President Obama described "an economy built on manufacturing" and outlined strategies to help American industry continue a recent trend of bringing offshore jobs home.

Demise of Internet piracy acts speak to power of online democracy While the Internet should be neither above nor below the law, Congress must take care not to undermine a platform rooted in the most exportable of American values - freedom of expression.

Is Epic Systems to Madison what Dell was to Austin? The numbers behind the rise of Epic Systems, a pioneer-turned-leader in the digital health records business, may surprise even those who are familiar with the story.

Wisconsin isn't a 'flyover' state when it comes to the aerospace industry The announced move of Kestrel Aircraft Corp. to Superior, Wis., may strike some skeptics as a curious landing strip for a company in the business of making small passenger planes. Don't bail out on this story just yet. Wisconsin has more air and space credibility than meets the eye.

Republican Party's 'non-Romneys' wrong on definition of venture versus vulture capital The debate over venture versus vulture capital is a distinction between Wall Street and Main Street. The buyout funds that sometimes eliminate jobs are a far cry from the angel, early stage and venture groups that work with young companies close to home.
