The Wisconsin Innovation Network (WIN) eNewsletter is a periodical of news, events and programs about the needs and challenges faced by new and growing technology-based businesses in Wisconsin.  WIN has chapters in western Wisconsin, the Lake Superior region, Madison, Milwaukee, northeast Wisconsin and central Wisconsin.
'Wisconsin YES!' student biz plan contest entry deadline extended

Wisconsin YES! will be open for Wisconsin middle and high school students to submit their science, tech or other business ideas online until 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6. The extension allows time for students to enter over the holiday break.   

  

Public, private and home-schooled students across Wisconsin are eligible to turn their ideas into business plans and compete for cash and prizes for themselves and their schools. 


Phase 1 of the contest requires a 250-word idea abstract be submitted online at www.wisconsinyes.com, where students can also find templates to help them develop their ideas. Students will receive feedback from professionals across Wisconsin, who will help judge the contest.  

Governor's Biz Plan Contest gears up for 2012

The Governor's Business Plan Contest is accepting entries until 5 p.m. Jan. 31, 2012, for its ninth annual contest. Over time, more than 2,000 entries have been received statewide and finalists have received more than $1 million in cash and other prizes. Produced by the Wisconsin Technology Council and partners that include the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp., the Governor's Business Plan Contest engages contestants in a six-month process that includes mentoring and comments from judges on selected plans. The contest also leads to valuable public and media exposure for the best business plans and spurs company creation in Wisconsin. Past finalists have raised a reported $20 million in private equity, such as angel and venture capital.

The 2011 Wisconsin Early Stage Symposium was held Nov. 2-3 in Madison, where 455 people took part in various aspects of the conference.

State leader in early stage investing to chair Wisconsin Angel Network advisory group

Tim Keane, director of the Golden Angels Network and outgoing director of the Kohler Center for Entrepreneurship at Marquette University, will become chairman of the  

 

Wisconsin Angel Network advisory committee.

Keane, who recently announced his resignation as director of Marquette entrepreneurship after a successful 10-year run, continues to manage the 65-member Golden Angels Network - one of the largest investor networks in terms of members in Wisconsin.  

 

The Golden Angels are a founding member of the Wisconsin Angel Network, which was created in 2005 to serve as a source of deals for Wisconsin investors, to assist with creating angel networks in Wisconsin, and to provide education and networking opportunities for angel investors. Brandon: Rural broadband access could be key to economic development
If rural Wisconsin is going to lure any call centers and high-tech jobs away from India or other countries in Asia - something Zach Brandon says is possible - then it's going to need much better access to broadband coverage.

The same is true if Wisconsin wants to keep luring busy vacationers to the state, help small, rural businesses reach customers and enable hospitals and clinics located outside urban centers make better use of tele-medicine, said Brandon, head of the Wisconsin Angel Network and a former deputy secretary at the old state Commerce Department.

ZBB Energy Corp. avoids stock delisting Menomonee Falls-based ZBB Energy Corp., a developer of intelligent, renewable energy power platforms, has regained compliance with the continued listing standards of New York Stock Exchange Amex.

FAA awards biofuels contracts to Virent, competitors Virent Inc. of Madison said Dec. 2 it is one of eight firms awarded contracts by the Federal Aviation Administration to develop plant-based jet fuels.

Clean Tech Open: Whole Tree Structures wins national green building award   Firms from the Upper Midwest won awards and funding in a national clean tech business competition Wednesday night.
Fascination with computers put Dalton on path to launch Fiserv George Dalton, who founded Brookfield-based Fiserv Inc., which became one of the world's largest data processors for financial institutions, died Nov. 17 at 83.
