Inside Wisconsin columns tackle state, tech issues
| | |
Tech Council President Tom Still shares insights on technology, the economy and politics through "Inside Wisconsin." Here are some recent columns:
New issues could hurt aims of Blue Cross health funds Robert Golden, dean of the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, can hardly contain his excitement when he's asked about research financed through money set aside after nonprofit Blue Cross Blue Shield United of Wisconsin converted to a for-profit corporation. After the recalls: Time to get back to business on Wisconsin's economy The high-stakes fight for control of Wisconsin's state Senate is over. The even higher stakes debate about securing the state's economic future should resume now. With less federal funding likely, can Wisconsin attract more industry research Even after the federal debt ceiling is raised, one thing is certain about federal spending over the next decade: There will be less of it than expected. To be precise, federal spending will drop by about $2.4 trillion from current estimates. That means a full range of programs, from social services to defense to academic research, are likely to feel the pinch. Keeping an old friend: Why Wisconsin should value GE Healthcare It's hard to fault GE Healthcare for wanting to expand its reach into China, where more than 1.3 billion people account for nearly one of every five human beings on the planet. There's no bigger emerging market for medical equipment in the world. It's not your Grandfather's iron mine: How the Gogebic mine fits northern Wisconsin Name the industry in which you would expect to find the following science and technology professionals: Chemical engineers, computer programmers, computer systems analysts, electrical engineers, environmental scientists, geochemists, geo-engineers, geophysicists, drafting technologists, metallurgical engineers and quality control engineers. Imagining a conversation between the 'Tweeters-in-chief' President Barack Obama recently hosted the first-ever White House "Twitter town hall" and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has shown himself to be a social media junkie, as well, even tweeting about his recent unscheduled sleep-over in Denver International Airport.
