The Wisconsin Innovation Network (WIN) eNewsletter is a periodical of news, events and programs about the needs and challenges faced by new and growing technology-based businesses in Wisconsin. WIN has chapters in western Wisconsin, the Lake Superior region, Madison, Milwaukee, northeast Wisconsin and central Wisconsin.

| 2011 Wis. Governor's Business Plan Contest - Open for entries! | | |

The 2011 Wisconsin Governor's Business Plan Contest is open for entries now through 5 p.m. on Jan. 31, 2011.
The grand prize is worth $50,000 in cash and in-kind services, and finalists once again have the chance to win $200,000 in cash and in-kind services. Since 2004, the contest has awarded $1 million in cash and in-kind services.
Wisconsin residents 18 years old and older are eligible, as are teams from Wisconsin-based businesses and organizations. Entries from outside Wisconsin from people or companies planning to relocate in the state may be accepted. Initial entry is a 250-word idea abstract.

Click here to download the Be Bold: Wisconsin Prosperity Strategy, a document released this week by the Wisconsin Economic Summit group. This group, which included the Wisconsin Technology Council among its conveners, worked on the prosperity strategy over a six-month period.

| Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery - now open! | |
The Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery facility, which is celebrating its grand opening, houses twin interdisciplinary research institutes: the Morgridge Institute for Research, a private, not-for-profit research institute dedicated to improving human health by accelerating scientific discovery to patient delivery; and the public Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, which is part of UW-Madison organized under its Graduate School.

| Business commentary: Changing times calls for evolving tax laws | |
The Wisconsin Dept. of Revenue has estimated the state loses $150 million each year in sales taxes on Internet sales and catalog purchases made by Wisconsin consumers who order items from out-of-state vendors. The 50 states collectively lose from $16 billion to $18 billion a year in unpaid sales tax, with $8.7 billion coming directly from online sales. Virent Energy Systems Inc., an energy technology company headquartered in Madison, Wis., was recently listed in the 2010 Global Cleantech 100 list. In a separate ranking, Virent's chief executive officer, Lee Edwards, and chief technology officer, Randy Cortright, were paired at No. 28 in the Biofuels Digest "Top 100 People in Bioenergy." | Madison social media marketer raises $6 million | |
A Madison company that provides social media marketing said Monday it has raised $6 million in a funding round led by American Family Insurance. Shoutlet Inc., previously known as Sway Inc., said it will use the money to support aggressive growth and product development. To date, Shoutlet has brought in a total of $9.2 million in investments.
