Early-stage companies from Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest will be professionally "coached" by venture and service professionals, as well as veteran company executives with stories to tell. Conference highlights include:
  • A Nov.10 SBIR/STRR awards luncheon featuring Winslow Sargeant, a former venture capitalist, now SBA leader.  Read more.
  • Investor-oriented tracks for angel-ready companies and beyond that are seeking private equity capital and the annual "Elevator Pitch Olympics."  Read more.
  • Presentation by Abbott Global External Research Organization, which is seeking drug discovery ideas in Wisconsin.  Read more
  • A workshop for entrepreneurs to learn and practice their pitch to investors
  • A "First Look Forum" for presenting selected pre-commercial, campus-based discoveries
  • An invitation-only event for investors hosted by the Wisconsin Angel Network
  • A Nov. 10 reception celebrating early stage companies
  • A workshop for companies that may seek SBIR grants
  • Major speakers with messages of interest to Wisconsin investors, entrepreneurs and others in the tech-based economy. Returning by popular demand: Bill Joos of Go-to-Market Consulting.

Tech Council's Still to write commentary for Journal-Sentinel

Tom Still, president of the Wisconsin Technology Council and the Wisconsin Innovation Network, is joining the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and JSOnline.com as a biweekly "Business Commentary" columnist....Read more.

Still's column debut, appeared Sunday, and focused on the Wisconsin Economic Summit's plan to put Wisconsin on the map to prosperity. Read the column in the Journal-Sentinel here.

Wisconsin pension fund explores venture strategy
The State of Wisconsin Investment Board is considering putting more money from the big state pension fund into top-performing venture capital funds on the coasts and, as part of that move, trying to steer money toward investment opportunities in the upper Midwest.

Wis Economic Summit produces plan to rev up state economy
The Wisconsin Technology Council is among the conveners of the 2010 Wisconsin Economic Summit Series, which has held meetings in La Crosse, Appleton, and most recently, Milwaukee.

On Oct. 5 in Milwaukee, a consortium of private and public-sector leaders finalized an economic plan to jolt Wisconsin's economy and guide state government out of financial crisis.

The report, "The Wisconsin Prosperity Strategy," offers what its authors describe as bold initiatives to reinvigorate the economy and educational and political systems.  Read more from the Wisconsin State Journal here.

Wisconsin's biosciences sector sees growth
While the rest of the state's economy was shrinking by more than percent, Wisconsin's bioscience sector grew by nearly 3 percent. It's a small sector that employs just 1.1 percent of all the workers in the state, but it also provides much higher-than-average earnings. Click here to read more from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
Acquiring firms can bring benefit to state's economy
It may seem counterintuitive that the sale of a start-up to an out-of-state firm would be good for Wisconsin, but it helps to set the stage for a cycle that spurs innovation, creates wealth and even lures bigger employers into the state. San Diego-based Gen-Probe acquired Prodesse, the privately held maker of diagnostic tests, for an initial price of $60 million and pledged to keep its operations in Wisconsin.
