Inside Wisconsin
Tech Council President Tom Still shares insights on technology, the economy and politics though "Inside Wisconsin." Here are some recent columns:
For next governor, economic growth is essential to reducing state budget deficit: The first question that might be asked of the leading candidates for governor of Wisconsin is, "Are you sure you want this job? Really sure?" The grim statistics discussed at the recent Wisconsin Economic Summit in La Crosse would lead even an optimistic observer to believe the state's financial status is shaky and its economic foundation is crumbling. Then again, what's an economic summit without a crisis - and what's a crisis without a call to action?.... Read more.
Latest roadblock to embryonic stem cell research hurts everyone - even its opponents: If a recent court ruling forces some of Wisconsin's stem-cell researchers to abandon their federally funded laboratories and equipment, those researchers may find temporary quarters in WiCell's research center near the UW-Madison campus. Because the WiCell lab isn't backed by federal dollars, it could serve as a safe harbor for researchers whose labs run short on money.... Read more.
Beyond a presidential photo opportunity, energy research is federal priority: Every president, Republican and Democrat, likes to visit Main Street businesses. It's a guaranteed news story in the city or state where Air Force One lands for the day, it usually helps local candidates of the same party, and the story often goes national if the president uses the setting to make a larger point about his administration's policies. President Obama's recent stop at ZBB Energy Corp. in Menomonee Falls was just such an example.... Read more.
First clinical trial with embryonic stem cells based on Wisconsin research: It's an enduring complaint about human embryonic stem cell research, often but not exclusively voiced by people opposed on moral grounds: If this research is so promising, why is it taking so long to produce treatments? The long-term answer may emerge in a human clinical trial of a stem-cell therapy for spinal cord injuries - a therapy developed from a line of cells first cultured in Wisconsin....Read more.
