'Angel' network activity up in 2009 over '08; follow-on rounds key | |
Young Wisconsin companies pulled in less funding in 2009 than in the previous year, but angel investing networks and funds were more active, the Wisconsin Angel Network announced in early June. Much of the investing was through follow-on rounds by angels in existing portfolio companies.
Early-stage investors overall put $73.2 million into state companies last year, down from the $99 million invested in 2008, said Joe Kremer, director of the network, a program of the Wisconsin Technology Council. Read more from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel here. |

Early-stage companies from Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest will be professionally "coached" by venture and service professionals, as well as veteran company executives with stories to tell. In addition to the hands-on instruction, the symposium will allow investor presentations for select early-stage companies, as well as a crowd favorite, the "Elevator Pitch Olympics."

Inside Wisconsin
Tech Council President Tom Still shares insights on technology, the economy and politics though "Inside Wisconsin." Here are some recent columns:
State sustainability rankings demonstrate Wisconsin industry is embracing change: "Sustainability" is a word that holds different meanings for different business leaders. Some see it as a mom-and-apple pie term used by environmentalists to describe any trend they like, regardless of cost. Others see sustainability as a business consideration that's here to stay, even if the metrics defining it are evolving... Read more. Defense-less no more: Wisconsin firms competing for, and winning, military contracts: For decades, Wisconsin lagged most of the 50 states when it came to federal defense spending. The lack of a major military base explained Wisconsin's poor return on its tax dollars - at least, in part - but a dearth of defense-related contracts seemed harder to justify given the state's manufacturing and research know-how.... Read more.
Hitting the green: Landing a major golf tournament scores economic payback: Luring the likes of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els to Wisconsin for a golf tournament may seem like a transitory, made-for-TV event, given the putt-and-run nature of professional golf. But the dollars left behind by the pros, their fans and sponsors can be an economic hole-in-one for states where tournaments are staged.... Read more.
The many faces and flavors of entrepreneurism in Wisconsin: Ask the average person to describe an "entrepreneur" and it may sound a bit like a white-coated scientist emerging from a laboratory with the promise of a life-saving drug, albeit 10 years and hundreds of millions of dollars away from reality... Read more.
Revival of Wisconsin Economic Summits provide forums for ideas: The original Wisconsin Economic Summits served their purpose by fading away. That's not to say the four summits that took place between 2000 and 2003 were unsuccessful. In fact, the first two summits identified economic trends and strategies that continue to shape the state.... Read more.
Instead of waiting for old jobs to reappear, entrepreneurs are creating their own: For many of those jobless or under-employed Americans, the climb back from the recession is is not waiting for that old job to reappear - but creating their own jobs by becoming entrepreneurs.... Read more.
