Fifty-one entries from 31 communities have advanced to the second round of the fifth annual Wisconsin Governor's Business Plan Contest, contest producers announced February 26.

The contestants were selected from a field of 250 first-round entries by an independent panel of judges organized through the Wisconsin Technology Council, which is producing the contest in conjunction with its membership subsidiary, the Wisconsin Innovation Network, the Wisconsin Angel Network and other statewide affiliates.

'Wisconsin's Biofuels Destiny' is theme for April conference in Stevens Point
 
Mark your calendar for April 16-17!

Wisconsin's fast-emerging potential as a center for the production of biofuels and other products from cellulose will be the topic of a conference to be held April 16-17 at UW-Stevens Point.

"Wisconsin's Biofuels Destiny: Food, fiber and forest products for the 21st century" will be produced by the Wisconsin Technology Council, NorthStar Economics, Rusk Prairie Consulting Group and the Lakes State chapter of TAPPI, the leading association for the worldwide pulp, paper, packaging and converting industries.

The conference will be held at UW-Stevens Point in the new Dreyfus University Center. The dinner speaker on April 16 is Dr. Timothy Donohue, principal investigator and scientific director for the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center. The center is one of three federally funded centers announced in 2007 by the U.S. Department of Energy; it will focus on ramping up production of cellulosic ethanol and other biofuels.

Tech Council Activity Update
 

The Wisconsin Technology Council has examined how leading presidential candidates "stack up" on science and technology issues. The piece reviews the proposals and records of U.S. Sens. Hillary Clinton, John McCain and Barack Obama. Read more at the Tech Council site.

More than 160 companies endorsed a letter to Sens. Feingold and Kohl thanking them for their work so far on patent reform legislation and encouraging them to continue to keep the interests of tech-based companies in mind.

The Wisconsin Angel Network is helping organize the 2008 Midwest Venture Summit. WAN is specifically helping develop event programming for angel investors focused on linking investors along the I-Q Corridor. Check the WAN site for updates!
