Joanna Rogers has a great smile. When you meet her she is so full of enthusiasm and her smile so broad, it's an instant attraction. A person with a good confident take on life.
Indeed she has, because despite some set backs, she has every confidence in where she's going in life.
She knows that attraction attracts success. One of the most interesting interviewees, in that she's the first to come up with a negative role model. A woman so vicious, that Jo committed never to be like her.
But in terms of turning things around, she found the opportunities in her redundancy, and it has opened up a whole new range of possibilities. She's found that the more you're open to possibilities, the more opportunities present themselves, or you recognize them when they come along.
All these inspirational women are a range, not just highly successful women at the peak of their career, but ones who are becoming, and enjoying the challenges along the way.
Women with experience of more than one culture, always have more to offer.

Have you ever lived/worked abroad? Does working in another country give you a different perspective?
Absolutely. Working in New York, Manhattan as a waitress gave me a personal perspective towards Americans, how similar and how different other American cities, and families are in America. You see the difference: they are very driven, very admirable qualities. It puts certain things in perspective. The concept - money grabbing, climb over each to get there - is not the reality. It's very interesting how many extremes there are of American politics. The concept of American politics is that every one is equal; each human has equal rights, it's the basis of what people believe in the country and very patriotic. It gives you perspective and comparative basis, which allows you to act outside your comfort zone. It's a new environment. You're not judged. It frees you up to do whatever, and to be whatever. Genuine reflection of who you really are think you are: "Oh actually now, I can see and re-think your values, motivations." |
A metaphor for yourself?
Basketball: driving toward 20 points down in the basketball game and determined. I'm a player in the team, I'm at the cross roads driving to find my way, and get that goal. One of the team, a mixture between people who can help the situation to resolve.
Finding the ultimate team goal. What we're playing for is financial / happiness, achievement and all helping each other. I'm probably the leader, ultimately its for me, but it's the teams' goal as well. I personally want to win. Whenever one is working together, you can't do it on your own, you need other people to help you and other people tuned into your team's goal.

The achievement you are most proud of, career or life event?
When I got my job as newly qualified attorney in New York. Usually all paralegals applying have to be American: Harvard; Yale Justice doctorate, so all agents, peers, and family didn't expect I would pass the New York bar exam. New York at bar, 10 other people; 2 passed first time. |
Which event gave the most learning?
Redundancy: Because, despite feeling low, I took time to get over it. But I realized that it gave me time to think, where to go, what to do, who to talk to. I suddenly saw this world of opportunity. I could do anything really. I chose time out: travel 2 months, free courses, British Library and City Business Library; anything and everything. I am like a sponge absorbing everything. I've come full circle I've re-found my passion for law; profession for law and entrepreneurial networking. Stimulates my ideas, being around creative people, different type of people.

Can being a woman be an advantage?
Yes. In dealing with other women. Women communicate better with both sexes, more easily, Women can empathise, more easily. Men often think, incorrectly, that it's about emotion and multi-tasking. |
In the law where do you think the balance of power lies between men and women? Women at the top hold significance power. They want that quality. Top women are often Alpha male; sacrifice family for success.
That may be how the business has to be.
