Welcome:   As the Southern Hemisphere moves into Autumn, with some welcome rain, up North its not just sunshine , but an unexpected floating cloud of volcanic ash.  I am mischievously tempted to wonder what the internet equivalent would be. Oh yes, it did happen in Estonia.

More Than Just a Change In Season

Longer days and gardens changing from spring colours of forsythia, and daffodils into the blue of hyacinths and comfrey, lilac and spring clematis.   A time for making new plans, and the focus will be on change.    What changes do you want to make?   What do you need to make the changes, and how much of a part does self belief play?   Moving out of your comfort zone into an exciting challenge.   You CAN change anything by the spin you put on it.    Can you do that?  One of my interviewees did on several occasions;    Sue was asked for a bad time in her career.
Examples of Change

Sue Thexton MD of ITN Image bank

"My greatest challenge:
The dot-com meltdown. The entire IT industry bottomed. My business went from $120million to $65million in one year. If you can manage this level of adversity you become stronger, and you learn so much. You also learn who your friends are, and people's strengths and weaknesses. Turning the business round and growing it back to beyond $120m was my greatest achievement."

You can read more of Sue Thexton's interview in the archive link.

Then of course there's the woman who led her life backwards:  Nina Barough

www.walkthewalk.org, follow the link to donate 'uniting against breast cancer".

First Nina got breast cancer then, when it was cured, she set up walkthewalk and there she met her husband.   When she received her Woman of the Year Award she was feeding her very new baby, while her husband waited out in the lobby.

Events Not To Be Missed

My forthcoming Seminars at City Business Library include:

  • Disaster into Opportunity
  • The Age of the Entrepreneur: Have you got what it takes?

I am also doing Overshadowed, Overlooked and Outrageous women, a fresh set, as an evening talk for the Barbican.

I'm currently thinking about pirates and adventurers, possibly Dr James Barry.   The City people in my seminars come up with great ideas, and they have a European or Global perspective, with a range of languages and experiences which I find exciting.
On a Musical Note

On the musical front, much excitement as South Bank Sinfonia gets into their stride, after the Opera House, and the Barbican, they play almost everywhere, and with exciting soloists. Michael Collins in May. If its half as good as last year it will be a treat. And all the St. John's rush concerts free, and at a civilized hour.  Their Mahler at the  RFH has a woman conductor and two women sopranos.   You can sponsor one of the players, or support by coming to the Rush hours concerts. Warning, get there early as the church soon fills up (and a free glass of wine).  Click here for more information.

The young baritone from Benalla, Australia, sang for Kiri, sang for the Queen and then for Sir Thomas Allen.   Currently he's singing  Carmen in a pub.    But for the Edinburgh Festival ,he will be joined by the brilliant pianist Aura Go who is also from Australia, though currently in Yale.   Click here for further details.

How did you get into law?   Was there a history in the family, or  was there a seminal moment?
It was always in my head. People always said  "You're going to be a good barrister."  So it was fed to me over time, teachers and family.   I was self confident when I had to be and at A levels, out of all the degrees, law stuck out most to me.  Just after the A levels was a process of elimination.  I wish I had researched more fully other options.

A metaphor for yourself?
Basketball:  driving toward  20 points down in the basketball game and determined.

I'm a player in the team, I'm at the cross roads driving   to find my way, and get that goal.

One of the team, mixture between people who can help the situation to resolve.

Finding the ultimate team goal.  What we're playing for is  financial / happiness, achievement and all helping each other.   I'm probably the leader, ultimately its for me, but it's the teams' goal as well .   I personally want to win.   Whenever one is working together, you can't do it on your own, you need other people to help you and other people tuned into your team's goal.

Does working in another country give you a different perspective?
Absolutely.  Working in New York Manhattan as a waitress  gave me a personal perspective towards Americans, how similar and how different other American cities, and families in America are.

You see the difference:  they are very driven, very admirable qualities.   It put certain things in perspective. The Concept - money grabbing, climb over each to get there is not the reality.  Very interesting how many extremes of American politics.  The concept of American politics is that every one is equal; each human has equal rights, it's the basis of what people believe in the country and very patriotic.

It gives you perspective and comparative basis, which  allows you to act outside your comfort Zone.   It's a new Environment, you're not judged;  it frees you up to do what ever, and to be whatever.   Genuine reflection of who you really are  think you are: "Oh actually now, I can see and re-think your values, motivations."

Advice to young women starting out either in the law or in business?

  • Soul search;  understand who you are;   why you're doing what you're doing.
  • It will change, but  focus and do act upon what you  think is necessary.
  • Do things to take you towards your aims.
  • Take other people's advice and act upon it.

And so another month passes.   As ever, go well in the world and remember that you have all the resources you need. If you are receiving this news-sheet for the first time, it entitles you to one Free Coaching Session, Business or Personal, OR a free seminar for your staff on Leadership and/or Diversity for your Business, or topic of your choice.
