3 Beautiful Women Greetings!

Welcome to both old and new readers.

Networking! what is it about networking and women?

Men do it too, only then it's dignified with the title old shcool tie.

Nicola Horlick (Bramdiva), believes that connecting is important, as she says life is connecting. Let's share our little black book. One of my role models Nicola.

A good week for women:

It seems that the winds of change are blowing: as I write this Hurricane Ike is bearing down on Texas. Perhaps she has a message about climate change. But also as I write, it's been a good week for women:

1)  Quentin Bryce was sworn in as the Governor General for Australia. This is to represent the Queen in her executive Quentin Bryce new Governer Generalrole, and   first time a woman has ever held the position. Moreover , she is a woman of a certain age, which means she brings all the experience and wisdom of her years.  People are heartened by her inclusivity.  This news is for the Australian chapter,  but here in England, we are changing the language.

2)  Not Maestro, but Maestra.  MAXIM Vengerov said it, but  he is an international musician, the male establishment, haven't learnt that the female is Maestra, and interestingly the final vote, came not fromQuentin Bryce the orchestra, but the public, as musicians are notorious for excluding women, either on the podium or in the orchestra. There is a wonderful moment in Blink, about trombones which makes the point about the lack of professional women musicians in positions of power.

3)  A serendipitous moment;  an English woman, former teacher, made a bet with her friends that she could live on a £1 a day for a year, and she did.  From which Janet Street Porter extrapolates that it might be a good idea to give women a go at the national economy, perhaps what is needed is a woman's approach

High Finance Women:
Corporate Finance Network

I must admit to approaching a seminar with the Corporate Finance Network  with a degree of trepidation: accountants and lawyers.   I always say that I meet the most interesting person in the room, well this time I was wrong. I met 20 fabulous women, and what impressed me most apart from the warm welcome and the attention they gave me, was their generosity and collaboration.  It was the best kind of meeting because I came away having learnt so much, and gained new insights into  networking.

Corporate Finance Network was founded jointly by Vanessa Williams and Tracey Williams  who was featured on the same day in the Western Media Daily business section.

Michael Ribbeck, writing in the Western Daily Mail, says:
"Tracey, one of the most senior female business specialists in Bristol, in charge of the corporate finance team  at the accountancy firm Burton Sweet.  Each year her team is responsible for around 30 deals and she personally gets involved in each and everyone. Last spring Tracey set up The Corporate Finance Network - an informal group designed for women working in the West Country. The organization now boasts about 30 members and meets regularly to swap advice, and contacts.  And Tracey has been at the sharp end of enough deals and negotiations to know the best way to go about business. Tracey Williams 'Networking is a vital part of the business but it is not always easy for women to go to the events, our group offers an alternative way of going about business'."

Happenings

Congratulations to Gabrielle, who is taking her business to the next level.   I loved the idea of personalized handcrafted celebration cards: calligraphy on line. The best of the old and the best of the new.  She designed the moving symbols on the landing page of  Christrainers.com: health, wealth and music.

"I have decided to close the e-cards website down on the 1st December 2008 for a major re-design.  The new design, illustration, handmade gifts and e-cards site will be launched during 2009.  For design and illustration work or to be put on the mailing list for the launch details, please email the studio at info@gabrielleizendesign.co.uk.

Great excitement as the NLP conference approaches; to meet old friends, make new ones, share experiences and be inspired. Last year Judith deLozier, this year Stephen Gilligan, If you haven't booked, hurry up while places last.

NLP Conference

Also in November: the Everywoman Conference.  Somehow I find that the women only networks seem to be the most fruitful, and interesting. (But not to denigrate the great guys I have met elsewhere.)

And I believe the amazing BLINK, (Tipping Point)  Malcolm Gladwell is speaking in November, at the London Business Forum.
Networking

"Networking is just about making connections. Life is about connections."
Nicola Horlick  of Bramdean and Bramdiva

When we shared our experiences of networking it was fascinating to see the variety of approach and technique, many shared the same experience or used similar techniques, but I want to mention  just a few.

Several people expressed their surprise at the serendipity effect, but in NLP  terms, it has to do with being relaxed, being yourself and you attract people and fortune. You become attractive.

I loved the way they expressed two sides of the coin. That you ask for what you want, but that also you give: a compliment, a connection or a network.   Another key word was memory.
Be memorable, but also remember. That means that you listen with attention, so when you next connect you can mention, the family member who was ill, something you have in common.

But I will end with a little story given to me: bravery.  Nicola Horlick one of the highest fliers in the city, was  set upon by muggers, threatened and stripped of her money and jewellery. But she kept her engagement ring, she took it off and threw it in the bushes, where she later retrieved it. Sometimes bravery is about believing in yourself, and refusing to see your self as a victim, you always have options.  In fact the guest speaker this year at the  prestigious Woman of the Year lunch held in the Guildhall is a woman who wants to rid the world of violence against women:
