Welcome

My recent seminar for the Top Graduates Forum at Imperial College was extremely well received. So much so that they’d like me to do both seminar and coaching at the top MBA world tour, Prague and Frankfurt. (Well I’m pushing for Singapore and Melbourne, but who knows).
But the response from the graduates who ranged across not only Europe but Asia etc, was extremely enthusiastic and made me think that there’s probably more to this role model idea than I’ve really explored.
So with encouragement from colleagues, I’ve decided to take out a couple of months to write the book “Success: the role of role models” Vol 1. -a provisional title.
I will still be available for telephone coaching, and some training sessions, but fewer speaking engagements in London, as some travel is involved. This is not just about female role models but of either gender and it's fascinating to see colleagues responses.

Some of my personal support groups Role Models:
Miller of Difficult Diners
TheDalai Lama

Dr Lawrence Plaskett – Scientist. Ground-breaking research into thyroid hormones.

Any stay-at-home mother of small children – “How do they stay sane?”

Dalai Lama
He remains calm in the face of all adversity. His friends and family are tortured and killed, his country taken over, and important religious documents and monuments totally destroyed. He has had to flee his own country and set up a community elsewhere. Most people hit back at even small provocation, the Dalai Lama is a Tibetan Buddhist, meaning he believes in non-violence. If we could all follow his example and avoid conflict however hard the circumstances, or perhaps more relevantly however right we know we are - wouldn’t the world be a calmer, quieter, happier place?

Madonna & her Physical Presence
Yvonne of Virtual PA Service
Madonna

I have so many role models, people I admire for a whole variety of reasons and not least the members of my family but to pick one that keeps coming to mind it would have to be Madonna.

Why: Her ability to be a chameleon, changing with the times and circumstances. Her physical prowess that I would liken to the ‘black panther’ image I hold so dear. She is immensely creative and even though I am not a great fan of her music, I appreciate her art; she certainly has talent and has developed it extremely well over the years. Madonna is a show person; what she lacks in singing skills, she more than makes up for in presence.

Madonna has matured beautifully; spiritually and as a mother & wife.
So is Madonna a true material girl? I doubt it; there is much more to her than that...

And some of my other role models:
Nelson Mandela - Ability to break down barriers & a smile that lights up any room
Martin Luther King - Total belief in his vision
Anita Roddick - Integrity

My Role models

In my professional life as an investment analyst, and indeed by current activities as independent business person, the need to make things up as you go along has meant that a firm reliance on one’s own ideas and creativity is absolutely paramount. I had not realised the need for role models until Pamela made me focus on the idea in one of her life coaching sessions. I have chosen three such role models – my late father, a Franciscan friar and a highly successful if controversial businessman.

My father was a (relatively minor) local government officer for most of his working life. The characteristics which made most impact on me were his absolute honesty and clear sense of fair play – in short intense personal integrity. No doubt too rigid an adherence to these principals can sometime prove a hindrance to worldly advancement but my father was his own man – and I admire that.

Brother Edward started his working life as a rather posh young officer in the British Army. He was one of the first British Soldiers to enter a notorious concentration camp at the end of the Second World War – an experience which led to him taking the Franciscan vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. His absolute passion and dedication to what he believed in, completely devoid of any artificial “holiness”, moved me greatly.

Michael O’Leary has become a well known public figure noted for the outspoken way in which he promotes his business. About nine years ago I led the marketing of the initial share issue of his airline RyanAir and got to know him reasonably well. I am sure that many readers will have their views concerning the man and his business but who can fail to be impressed by his exclusive and determined focus on developing his business.

I have absolutely no desire to be completely like any of my role models but, as you can see, I have identified three characteristics which I admire greatly. I certainly aspire to these characteristics and on good days might even get close to achieving one or two of them – integrity, passion and focus.

My final thoughts...

Initially when asked about role models people usually say 'oh, I don’t have any'... or I’ll have to think about it, a sure indicator that we’re tapping into the OTC or nmotivator. What follows this process is fascinating.

People are amazing, and their role models are rarely what you’d expect. It is some of the qualities which make the role models unique, but those very qualities are a reflection of your qualities or values, and I don’t know whose came first! I am currently researching psychic DNA or should I say the DNA of the psyche, not yet into the paranormal.

This month I have realized the great and wonderful benefit of good friends in a time of trouble.
So an enormous thank you to all my friends on both sides of the globe; but this time especially to Barb for being there...always.

So go well in the world and remember:

People are doing the best that they can, within their model of the world.
Its something which I especially need to remember...

Best Wishes
