Philanthropy In/Sight: LGBTQ

Developed in partnership with the Foundation Center, Funders for LGBTQ Issues is proud to announce the launch of Philanthropy In/Sight: LGBTQ. This online resource is a special, custom edition of the Foundation Center's Philanthropy In/Sight data visualization platform-focusing on the field of LGBTQ issues. With this unique, dynamic tool, you can create maps that visualize the scope and reach of LGBTQ focused philanthropy - from local communities to countries around the globe. Combining the last ten years of data collected by both Funders for LGBTQ Issues and the Foundation Center, it will allow users to plot the location of grantmaking on world maps, drill down for details about organizations and grants, explore emerging trends by viewing maps with aggregated grantmaker and grant data, and more. By providing grantmakers with a sector-wide overview, Philanthropy In/Sight: LGBTQ will prove helpful to grantmakers in numerous ways, such as learning about trends in grantmaking, identifying gaps in funding, finding funding possible funding partners, and generally assisting in strategic grantmaking. We anticipate that Philanthropy In/Sight: LGBTQ will emerge as a valuable tool supporting the advancement of LGBTQ philanthorpy. To learn more and utilize Philanthropy In/Sight: LGBTQ, click here.

UPCOMING FUNDER WEBINARS

Thursday, September 27, 2012 | 10:00 - 11:30 am PT

Across the U.S. and beyond, grassroots social justice organizations are losing critical funding from faith-based funders because they courageously align with the reproductive and/or LGBTQ rights movements. This results in isolation of certain grassroots groups and disruption of movement building. Advancing social justice requires broad-based coalitions. How can social justice funders support risk-taking and strengthen cross-issue organizing and advocacy?

This webinar briefing for funders will highlight experiences from California and Colorado - demonstrating how social justice organizing and advocacy has been disrupted by faith-based funders and how progressive funders and others can be supportive. It will also feature political context-setting by Catholics for Choice and time to discuss future work. Register here.

Paul Di Donato Marriage Equality at the Ballot Box

A guest article by Paul Di Donato, Civil Marriage Collaborative, a Proteus Fund Initiative

This year is already proving to be one of the most important years for marriage equality the United States has ever seen. Along with important statements in support of marriage equality from President Obama, The NAACP and The National Council of La Raza, at the state level more states are poised to move towards marriage equality in definitive ways than ever before.  Voters in Maine, Maryland and Washington State will all be faced with ballot initiatives that if approved would provide the freedom to marry for LGBTQ couples in those states while Minnesota voters face the option of pushing back on an attempt to incorporate a discriminatory ban on marriage equality into state law. (See Freedom to Marry's overview of progress in the states here.)

With more than $15.3 million in total grants since its founding in 2004, the Civil Marriage Collaborative has played an instrumental role supporting every state-based marriage equality victory to date. And 2012 is no exception as we have invested heavily - $1.8 million this year - in cutting-edge public education, organizing and coalition-building work to help change hearts and minds about the importance of fairness and justice for LGBTQ couples who wish to marry.

Many other 501(c)(3) and (c)4 funders of all types have flocked to this cause this year at the national and the state level.  In fact there have been important breakthroughs in this area even at the corporate support level in some of the hotly contested states such as Washington and Minnesota. There are many ways that  interested grantmakers can identify opportunities to collaborate or contribute to this work. For more information, ideas and options, contact me, Paul Di Donato, at the Civil marriage Collaborative.

Forward Promise, a new $9.5 million initiative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), is focused on promoting opportunities for the health and success of middle school- and high-school-aged boys and young men of color. RWJF has issued a Call for Proposals that seeks innovative, community-based projects working to strengthen health, education, and employment outcomes for boys and young men of color. With this CFP, the Foundation will award up to 10 grants of up to $500,000 each to support projects with preliminary evidence of impact in school discipline, dropout prevention, mental health interventions, and career training.
