From The Archives,
Dusty Pruitt Papers
Now Available for Research
| |
Throughout the year, ONE offers internship opportunities to students who are interested in working in archives or just want to learn more about LGBTQ history. This past spring, a library science intern, Sean Marshall, visited us all the way from Detroit to work on the collection of Rev. Dr. Dusty Pruitt--noted Army veteran, lesbian activist and former pastor at the Metropolitan Community Church in Long Beach.
During her 25-year tenure as pastor of MCC Long Beach, Rev. Pruitt became a famous and outspoken advocate for gay and lesbian military personnel and veterans. She began serving as an army officer in 1970, and transferred to the Reserves six years later. In 1983, during her pastoral tenure and her position as a CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear) defense instructor in the Army Reserve, she gave an interview to the Los Angeles Times, entitled "Pastor Resolves Gay, God Conflict: Church Works to Heal Homosexuals' Religious Scars." The article initiated a review into Rev. Pruitt's character, resulting in the revocation of her promotion to Major and her eventual honorable discharge. Together with the American Civil Liberties Union and Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, Pruitt fought a 12-year legal battle with the Department of Defense, ending in 1995 with Pruitt's reinstatement and promotion to Major, and then retirement from the Army Reserve
.
Now available for research, the Dusty Pruitt Papers includes material from Pruitt's legal dispute with the Department of Defense; proposals for a film about Pruitt, entitled A Woman at War; and her ministry at the MCC Long Beach. For more information, visit our collections page at:
