2nd ONE Queer Film Fest
Twenty years ago when the state of California denied them equality, queer people took to the streets and demonstrated for days.
Gov. Pete Wilson's veto of equal rights legislation led LGBT people to re-frame the agenda and make their voices heard.
Film Fest Flyer  Join us as we screen the documentary "Into the Streets," which captures this moment in our history. Short films by seven other young queer filmmakers capture the contemporary issues and cultural trends of our community.
The films are part of the 2nd ONE Queer Film Fest being held at the Downtown Independent Theater on May 22.  The screening will be followed by Q&A with the filmmakers and a rooftop after-party with DJ music from the Mustache Mondays DJs.

Archives and interviews:

Using ONE Archives to trace the life and death of ACT UP/LA (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, Los Angeles)

Benita Roth PhD.Benita Roth PhD.

Associate Professor of Sociology, History, and Women's Studies State University of New York, Binghamton

On December 4, 1987, 100-200 activists met at Plummer Park in West Hollywood for a "town meeting to beat AIDS."  Out of this meeting the ACT UP/LA chapter was born, a direct action, militant anti-AIDS group that would change the relationship among people with AIDS, their loved ones, the LGBT community, the government, and the medical community.  ACT UP was part of the ongoing struggle to democratize health care in the U.S and give greater voice to those affected by the disease. While many died in this pursuit, others are alive because of ACT UP's efforts.
I have been studying ONE Archives' ACT UP/LA and AIDS History Project collections to learn how gender dynamics, community alliances, and anti-AIDS organizing directed the internal structure and external successes of ACT UP/LA. Through this research, I hope to form a full story of how LGBT identities in ACT UP/LA were negotiated, given social inequalities of gender and race, and how anti-AIDS activists made sense of their positions as outsiders and as insiders in the growing "AIDS industry."
Only because of the existence of collections like those at ONE Archives is such invaluable research possible.
In May, Dr. Roth will be conducting interviews in Los Angeles of people involved with ACT UP. If you are interested in being interviewed please contact her at broth@binghamton.edu
