ONE Archives Receives National Film Preservation Foundation Grant

ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives has received its first grant from the National Film Preservation Foundation (NFPF).  Over $9000 has been awarded to ONE Archives to preserve early 1970s home movies of the San Francisco gay and lesbian community.  Shot on Super8mm color film by entrepreneur and activist, Harold Call, the home movies reveal rare moving images of the early 1970s GLBT community as well as document activities of prominent GLBT organizations such as the Society for Individual Rights (SIR) and the Tavern Guild of San Francisco (TGSF).  Strip of Hal Call Film

Call, who was a controversial figure in the history of the Mattachine Society, served as President of the Mattachine's San Francisco chapter and as the editor and publisher of the Mattachine Review.  His collection includes over 300 films and videotapes of home movies that give unique glimpses of GLBT life in San Francisco, including the Gay Freedom Day parades, gay bar dances, and drag queen pageants.  Funds from the NFPF will go toward creating preservation masters and digital copies of these one-of-a-kind films.

From ONE Archives Collection:
The Michael Goodwin Collection

The collection of artist, writer, video producer, and chronicler Michael Goodwin has just been opened for research at the ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives. The collection consists of personal journals, artwork, writings, videos, photography, and other material documenting the diverse career of Michael Goodwin. The collection covers Michael Goodwin's pioneering role in the promotion of safe sex practices, including his hosting of the "New York Jacks" safe sex parties during the early years of the AIDS crisis. The collection also contains videotapes and administrative records of his production of the first ever safe sex pornography video series, the Goodjac Chronicles.

The extensive videocassette collection includes documentation of Gay Pride Parades in New York and San Francisco, the Folsom Street Fair, the First Annual Erotic Film Awards, and other events. The collection also contains his widely exhibited Victorian Artistics drawing series as well as his original manuscripts of Dance You Fool, The Floor's on Fire, The Weekend with Narcissus and Infidelity, and others.

One of the highlights of this collection is the near complete set of personal journals maintained by Michael Goodwin from 1970 to 2005. The journals reveal the innermost thoughts of an artist at work, including poems, prose, journal entries, sketches, drawings, and other ideas, many never realized in published form.

The final processing of this collection has been completed by one our most devoted interns, Emily Prior. Because of her hard work and dedication, we have been able to preserve and provide access to one the truly unique minds of the LGBT community. Please come visit and explore the treasures of this collection as well as the works and achievements of the pioneering people and organizations across all our historic collections.

NEH Matching Funds
In previous newsletters, ONE Archives shared the exciting news that we've received the largest grant for an LGBT organization from the National Endowment for the Humanities--$272,086.00. The grant requires matching funds, so we must turn to you, our community, for support. ONE Archives relies on the donations of its members for operating funds, to pay for such things as our Office Specialist and the conservation of the art and historic audiovisual materials entrusted to ONE Archives over the years. Any donation you make now will serve as a matching gift and help satisfy the terms of this incredible grant. Please make your donation online today. LGBT history will thank you!
