Greetings !
As the Summer moves on ONE continues to turn up the heat on our productivity! Our Art Conservation Project, begun in June surges ahead, as our archivists continue their work on the Founders and Pioneers materials under the recently received NEH grant.

Please read on to find out more about these and other fascinating activities at ONE Archives.
ONE & Our Art Conservation Project

In June, with a generous donation from Jehan Agrama and Dwora Fried, ONE began the Art Conservation Project.

Art historians David Evans Frantz, Mia Locks, and Susan McCullough are currently cleaning and wrapping over one thousand works and listing them in our databases with photographic images. Soon you'll be able to view ONE's collections on-line.
In Phase II of this Project, which we hope to begin in August, we'll begin to do the same kind of conservation work on our three-dimension pieces and sculptures, begin researching provenance and continue to improve on the storage for the collections.

This effort will culminate in an exhibition in October of 2011 under the auspices of the Getty Museum in a Southern California-wide event called Pacific Standard Time (PST). PST will include ONE's retrospective exhibition Queertopia: Art and the Seeds of Revolution, 1945-85, which, as it's title suggests, will look back at early art efforts in the queer community of the mid-twentieth century from the time of the birth of the American LGBT movement.  If you'd like to help with our Art Conversation Project, please send your donation to us or contact our office at 213-741-0094 and donate via phone. We need another $10,000 for this project!

Our Newest Archivist
ONE  is happy to welcome Kyle Morgan as the newest member of our archives staff.  Kyle's experience and enthusiasm has been a wonderful addition to our ONE family and we look forward to working with him over the next years. If you visit our archives feel free to stop in and say hello!

Kyle Morgan, ArchivistBy Kyle Morgan, MLIS

     Archivist

I wanted to introduce myself as the new assistant archivist at ONE. I recently graduated from UCLA with a Masters in Library and Information Sciences with a focus on archives. I come to the archives after almost three years in the Institutional Archives at the Getty Research Institute. I was brought on as part of the NEH grant to assist with processing seventeen collections of our historic individual and institutional pioneers. I couldn't be more excited to join this amazing organization and expert archival team in keeping alive LGBT cultural history.

While the materials I worked on at the Getty focused on institutional legacy, I have been touched by the amazing individual legacies that make up the materials here at the archives. I am currently working on the Twice Blessed Collection, the largest Jewish LGBT collection in the world, and have been moved beyond words regarding the herculean effort of Johnny Abush in amassing this collection so that others may better understand and be proud of their Jewish LGBT identity. He is but one of hundreds of inspirational stories documented in the archives that make this institution such an incredible treasure.

I am working hard to get to know all the members of this vast ONE family, especially the amazing trove of volunteers who devote their efforts in the preservation of an LGBT legacy. Their knowledge of the archives and LGBT history are essential resources to research, reference, and archival processing. In addition, their stories and personal experiences make the archival materials come to life in a deeply personal and emotional way. Whether you're researching materials or just stopping by to see what the archives are all about, be sure to engage the volunteers and tap into their vast knowledge.

Thank you for letting me introduce myself to you and I hope to see you all at the archives.

Researcher Request:
Were you at the Black Cat Bar when it was raided New Year's Eve 1966/67?
Black Cat Protest
Black Cat Protest
Or, were you at the protests that followed in February 1967?

I am writing an article about what happened that night at the Black Cat, the protests that followed, and the historical significance of it all.   So, if you were there, or you know someone who was there, I'd love to talk or email with you.  I look forward to connecting with you.

NEH Matching Funds
In previous newsletters, we shared the exciting news that we've received the largest grant for an LGBT organization from the National Endowment for the Humanities--$272,086.00. Great news, but we need matching funds for that grant and we are turning to you, our community, for help.  ONE is constantly in need of general operating funds for salaries for our support positions, such as our Office Specialist who answers your calls and e-mails. We need archival materials for our art collections and to help us save our audiovisual collections.  There is still so much to do to save our history.  We're doing our bit and we need your support and donations to meet the goals of this incredible grant. Please make a donation online todayEvery bit helps!
