Greetings ! May has been a busy month for ONE. Lots of fun and forward motion. Our first Film Fest, Bingo night and mentions in the media have made it an exciting time.
Please read on to find out more about these and other fascinating activities at ONE Archives.

 | ONE In The Media
| The award of our NEH grant made news this past month in The Advocate and the online news site "Living in the Queer Times."
ONE has also just been featured in a campaign by the organization Servicemclick image to see full size | embers Legal Defense Fund. They have been sending letters from service members to President Obama supporting the repeal of "Don't ask Don't Tell." They were alerted to a letter that had been published in ONE Magazine (September 1961) a copy of which they have forwarded to the president. This touching letter from a service man to his lover has gone viral and is now all over the web, proving again the importance of ONE's work in preserving our history. It is testimony to the idea that a letter written sometime before 1961 is still as moving today as the day it was written. |
 | ONE Queer Film Fest
| Our first ONE Queer Film Fest was a resounding success! With virtually a full house, the wonderfully responsive audience enjoyed a day of Queer Culture spanning many generations and the gamut of Queer life. ONE would like to thank the filmmakers and attendees in helping us to raise funds to help us in our mission to honor the past, celebrate
the present, and enrich the future of the LGBTQ community! Special thanks also go out to board member Tom DeSimone for championing this event, our Archivist Loni Shibuyama, the staff at the Downtown Independent & the wonderful folks of Mustache Mondays for providing the music at the afterparty! Look for more fun ONE events in the future!

 | From Our Collections: Christopher Street West
| 1970 CSW Flier | On May 14, 1970, Reverend Troy Perry (along with Robert Humphries and Morris Kight) submitted a parade permit application to the Los Angeles Police Commission for a parade that would take place in Hollywood on June 28th. In the box marked PURPOSE OF PARADE, the application reads: "A joyous celebration of the total freedom of homosexuals in Los Angeles, with their families and friends, indicating that they are full citizens of this community and their rights to use the streets in the city of Los Angeles."
Morris Kight, Gay Liberation Front CSW Parade 1970 | Surprisingly, the parade permit was granted; Hollywood Boulevard was closed down; and the parade on June 28, organized by Christopher Street West, a group of activists that included One founder Jim Kepner, marked the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots as well as the nation's first gay pride parade. This year, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of that very first "joyous celebration."

NEH Matching Funds
| In the last newsletter, we shared the exciting news that we've received the
largest grant for an LGBT organization from the National Endowment for
the Humanities--$272,086.00. Great news, but we need matching funds for
that grant and we are turning to you, our community, for help. ONE is
constantly in need of general operating funds for salaries for our
support positions, such as our Office Specialist who answers your calls
and e-mails. We need archival materials for our art collections and to
help us save our audiovisual collections. There is still so much to do to
save our history. We're doing our bit and we need your support and donations
to meet the goals of this incredible grant. Please make a donation online today. Every bit helps! Sincerely,
Joseph R. Hawkins, Ph.D Anthropology and Gender Studies University of Southern California President ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives
