 | From Our Collections: Edward Westrick Collection on Veterans C.A.R.E.
| In early 1984,
following California Governor Deukmejian's veto of AB1 (a California
state gay rights measure), writer and health administrator Jim Highland
began meeting regularly with fellow veterans to discuss issues relevant to the
gay and lesbian community. By May of
that year, the group, which had grown to approximately 30 people, began
developing a charter, bylaws and incorporation papers, and soon the Veterans
Council for American Rights and Equality, Inc. (Veterans CARE) was founded in
July 1984. First public appearance of Veterans C.A.R.E. Jim Highland 1st officer of National Gay and Lesbian Association. |
Veterans CARE's
major activities included fighting discrimination on behalf of former service
members and upgrading "dishonorable" discharges to "honorable"; organizing West
Hollywood's first Veterans' Day Parade and Vietnam Memorial; taking an active
role in the 1987 March on Washington; and publishing a monthly newsletter, Aware. In 1991, lesbian veteran Miriam Ben-Shalom, working with other veterans and Veterans CARE officers, organized the national organization, the
Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Veterans of America (GLBVA), with local chapters
throughout the United States.
Subsequently, the Los Angeles Council of Veterans CARE became the Los Angeles chapter of the
GLBVA.
The Edward Westrick
Collection on Veterans CARE is now available for research at ONE Archives. Collected by former Veterans CARE Commander,
Edward Westrick, materials include papers, photographs and memorabilia
documenting activities of the Los Angeles Veterans CARE and the National GLBVA.

NEH Matching Funds
| Last newsletter we shared the exciting news that we've received the
largest grant for an LGBT organization from the National Endowment for
the Humanities--$272,086.00. Great news, but we need matching funds for
that grant and we are turning to you, our community, for help. ONE is
constantly in need of general operating funds for salaries for our
support positions, such as our Office Specialist who answers your calls
and e-mails. We need archival materials for our art collections and to
help us save our audio collections. There is still so much to do to
save our history. We need your support and donations. Many of you
will be the recipients of checks from the Federal and State Income Tax
folks in the next few weeks. When you receive your check, think of
ONE and consider sending us a donationof $100 or more. We're doing our bit and we need your help
to meet the goals of this incredible grant. Please make a donation online today every bit helps! Sincerely,
Joseph R. Hawkins, Ph.D Anthropology and Gender Studies University of Southern California President ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives
