Hooray!!! The NEH and ONE!!!!
|
ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives has received one of the largest single grants given to an LGBT organization by the National Endowment for the Humanities in the last 30 years! The ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives, continuing its success in preserving the legacy of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans, has been awarded a $272,086 grant by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
"We are thrilled to receive this support from the NEH not only for the preservation of LGBT history, but also for the acknowledgment that our work at ONE is important and successful," said ONE Board President, Joseph R. Hawkins, Ph.D.
Funded by the NEH Humanities Collections and Reference Resources Grant, the "ONE Founders and Pioneers Cataloging Project" will catalog early personal papers, records, photographs and other archival material documenting significant pioneers and organizations of the LGBT movement. The generous support from the NEH will go to technological upgrades, archival supplies and the hiring of additional professional archivists for two years. Upon completion of the grant, over 600 linear feet of archival materials and approximately 500 digitized images will be available for public research, including the records of ONE Institute, the first organization to offer classes and degrees in gay and lesbian studies; and the papers of Harry Hay, founder of the Mattachine Society and many other pioneering organizations.
Collected for over 60 years by ONE and historian and activist, Jim Kepner, materials in ONE's collection span over a century, attracting researchers throughout the United States and internationally. "ONE has always been recognized as the largest gay archive in the world," said Greg Williams, ONE's Vice President. "This material was collected, saved and gifted to us by previous generations of gay activists, and it is this generation's job to preserve this material and make it accessible."
The project will follow up on the work completed by ONE during the last year with monies from the funding arm of the National Archives (National Historical Publications and Records Commission.) That project resulted in 115 collections being cataloged. The NEH project funds salaries for three archivists for two years as well as archival supplies. ONE will have to match funding for this project.

Dwora Fried "Think Inside the Box"
|
Save the date on April 3rd we have another very exciting opening reception at the ONE Archives Gallery & Museum space.
Self described "Austrian-Jewish-Lesbian
artist with Italian overtones," Dwora Fried creates provocative works which
examine the constructs of the personal and the subconscious while using memory
and imagination to transport the viewer in dreamscapes and collage. Her
assemblages capture moments, sometimes voyeuristic, sometimes spectacular, but always
thought provoking. Informed by her history, her work reveals personal moments
and invites individual participation.
ONE
Archives Gallery and Museum is
honored to announce the opening of her exhibition
entitled "Think Inside the Box." c

From Our Collections: Matthew and Buddy of Glendale Photo Albums, Coll2009-019
|

Throughout the 1960s and 70s, Matthew Schmidt and Albert
Antunes, or "Matthew and Buddy of Glendale" as they are more commonly known,
were local gay celebrities who were famous for holding elaborate costume and
cocktail parties in their home. Outside
of the usual bar scene, long-time couple Matthew and Buddy created their own
community of friends and party-goers, including a lot of gay men.
Following Matthew's death in 2007, Buddy gathered up the dozens
of photo albums they had and donated them to ONE Archives. The photo albums date from the mid-1960s through the mid-1990s and include hundreds of
photos of the couple's parties and their international travel. The Matthew and Buddy of Glendale Photograph
Album Collection is now available for research at the ONE Archives.
