COLLECTIONS HIGHLIGHT: The Ralph Judd Collection on Cross-Dressing in the
Performing Arts
|
In the late 1970s, Ralph W. Judd (1930-2007), a former Coast
Guard Commander, began collecting materials for what became the world's largest
collection on the history of cross-dressing in the performing arts. The materials he collected focused on popular
music and vaudeville from the 1890s through the 1930s; and on film and
television throughout the 20th century. It consists primarily of sheet music
(1848-1988) and studio publicity stills of motion pictures (1900-1996) and
television productions (1950-2000) that depict cross-dressing men and women. Also included are materials on musical
theater, non-musical theater, ballet, opera, and contemporary popular
music.

The collection also includes Judd's writings-both published
and unpublished articles on cross-dressing-as well as over 100 posters of
motion pictures and theatrical performances that contain cross-dressing. In addition, a small portion of the
collection consists of sheet music, photographs and postcards relating to
musical theater and vaudeville stars of the late 19th and early 20th
centuries, including Julian Eltinge, one of the most well-known female
impersonators of the 20th century.
In 1988, Judd earned a Ph.D. from Clayton University
with his thesis, Origins of Crossdressing: A History of performance en
travesty. In the following years, he
continued to publish his writings as well as pictorial books, including Drag
Gags: Fun with Female Impersonation from the Movies (1991) and Drag Gags
Return: Tongue-in-Cheek Fun with Female Impersonation from the Movies (1992.) With generous support from longtime ONE volunteers, Jim Deeton and David
Hensley, the Ralph W. Judd Collection is now available for research at
ONE Archives. Visit the "Collections"
page on our website at www.onearchives.org/collections for more
