A.J. Epstein's Queer Culture:
Friends, Lovers, & Other Assignments
|
 Epstein,
a photographer, magazine art director and artist from Los Angeles, has
been photographing queer culture across the country since 1969. His
documentation of the people and events that have contributed to LGBT
culture in the U.S. has been widely praised since he began snapping
images of Chicago's first pride parade in the early 1970s. The images
which document novelists or artists, actors, photographers, tattoo
artists, and ordinary citizens offers an in-depth examination of how
queer culture has evolved over the last 40 years.
Ann Bannon, author of lesbian pulp novels Odd Girl Out and Bebo Brinker,
has noted that:
"In his iconic photography, you can trace the rise of
confidence and courage that characterize the LGBTQ world today. Here
are the muscle men, dykes, and divas of the Gay Pride parades, from
their early beginnings to today, and from sea to shining sea. Here are
the stars and the everyday folk of the community. With his artist's
acumen, AJ manages to segue easily from significant people: Tom of
Finland, Robert Mapplethorpe, Edmund White, and dozens more--to
significant expressions of gayness: body art, leather, entwined women,
and frank eroticism of all kinds. His portraits can be thoughtfully
considered, both playful and introspective."
Epstein
started working as a rock photographer in Chicago in the late 1960's, contributing pieces to a variety of newspapers, including RollingStone, Crawdaddy, The Chicago Readerand the early Advocate.
He was in the audience snapping pictures during the infamous mock slave
auction in West Hollywood in 1976 that was raided by L.A. police, and
at a sit-down strike in New York protesting the film Cruising in
1980, and at an early Chicago Pride parade haranguing Anita Bryant.
Since then, he has photographed queer life in Chicago, Los Angeles, New
York, Tennessee, Australia, Provincetown, Fort Lauderdale and elsewhere.
In addition, Epstein helped with design for the classic gay movie Kansas City Trucking Company directed by Joe Gage and the design of a Pansy Division album. His
art, graphic work and photography have been shown at the Smithsonian,
Stompers Gallery in New York, several galleries in Chicago, and the Tom
of Finland Art Weekend in West Hollywood. His images are included in the giant new Taschen book on Tom of Finland by Dain Hanson.
The exhibition will open on September 26th and will run through January 10, 2010. The Gallery is open Friday from 4:30-8:30pm and Saturday and Sunday from 1-5pm.
