Lesbian History Gets a Boost
|

To bring attention to
the preservation work of gay & lesbian archives around the country, Los Angeles activist Jeanne Córdova, has made a donation of
$30,000 to the ONE. It is the largest
donation given by a lesbian donor to an LGBT archive. Córdova is former
publisher of the national feminist-lesbian newsmagazine the Lesbian Tide (1971-1980).
Córdova's donation was
specifically awarded to ONE to facilitate current archival holdings of their
lesbian feminist collections. "In this
newly energized era of LGBT activism, our younger generations are eager to
learn about their heritage that's not taught in schools," notes Córdova. "Lesbian history is a critical part of that
heritage."
Announcement of the
donation will take place on August 16 at an event from 2-5 pm called "Our Lives on the Page" at ONE Archives. The event will highlight the unveiling of a
new art piece commissioned by LEX, the Lesbian Exploratorium (co-founded by
Córdova), as a permanent Archive exhibit. Titled "The Lesbian Legacy Wall", the floor-to-ceiling installation was
designed by Cathy Cade of San
Francisco. The Wall is collage of historic and diverse
covers from lesbian publications around the world, spanning six decades, from
1948-2008.

The festivities will
also include a poetry performance by acclaimed lesbian author and poet Judy Grahn, and video and slides of
historic lesbian events. Grahn's work spans the eras from bar culture to
lesbian feminism to recently touring with performer Ani di Franco. Her best-known work
includes 'The Psychoanalysis of Edward the Dyke', the classic 'Another
Mother Tongue' and her 2008 Lammy-award
winning 'love belongs to those who do the
feeling'.
"Our Lives on the
Page" will take place on Sunday, August 16, from 2pm-5pm at 909 W. Adams Blvd, Los Angeles, CA.
Program begins at 2:30pm. A garden reception will follow.

Lesbian Legacy Collection |
In 1996, the ONE
Institute and International Gay & Lesbian Archives (now ONE Archives) introduced three female members to its board of directors: Jeanne Córdova, Ivy Bottini
and Karen Quimby. Along with other lesbian women on the ONE board, Córdova,
Bottini and Quimby spearheaded a campaign to increase lesbian visibility at ONE
and to develop a special collection within the archives, known as the Lesbian
Legacy Collection (LLC.)
The LLC developed
under the supervision of lesbian feminist, activist and librarian, Yolanda
Retter, who was hired as LLC's full-time librarian. In 1997, the LLC first opened its doors to
the public, and among Retter's projects and activities was collecting,
organizing and preserving the LLC Subjects Files. With the generous support of Jeanne Córdova,
the LLC Subject Files have now been processed and are available for research at
ONE.
With over a
thousand files, the Lesbian Legacy Collection Subject Files contains
photographs, clippings, catalogs, organizational records, flyers, pamphlets,
correspondence, manuscripts and other material documenting people, places and
events significant to lesbian history and the women's rights movement. Image: Rita Mae Brown by Joan E. Biren
