Collections Highlight: New Acquisitions by Loni Shibuyama, Archivist
|
In addition to the many public programs and exhibitions we
have planned for this summer, the ONE staff and volunteers are also continuing
to work hard reaching out to the community to acquire new material, build upon
our collections, and make them available for future researchers. So far this year, ONE has received several
donations, including the archives of Christopher
Street West and the papers of Betty Berzon.
Last October, we opened our new ONE Archives
Gallery & Museum in West Hollywood with an
exhibition on the history of the Los
Angeles Christopher Street West pride parades and
festivals. After this hugely successful
inaugural exhibit, CSW donated a large portion of material from their archives,
dating back to the organization's inception in 1970. This collection includes hundreds of
photographs, dozens of videos, t-shirts, ephemera and printed material
documenting Los Angeles'
pride celebrations and other CSW activities.
ONE has also acquired the papers of renowned activist, psychotherapist
and author, Betty Berzon (1928-2006.)
After struggling with her sexuality for many years, Berzon publicly came
out at the age of 40 and soon became a tireless advocate for LGBT rights by
providing therapy for LGBT individuals and couples, writing for several
publications and creating awareness of LGBT issues in the public at large. Donated
by her longtime partner, Teresa DeCrescenzo, Berzon's large collection of over
60 boxes includes research for her books and articles, audiovisual material
used in her counseling sessions, her work in the American Psychiatric
Association and the Gay
Community Services
Center (now the LA Gay
& Lesbian Center), several photo albums and other material. These and other collections will soon be
available for research at the ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives.
