General Manager's Report by Erin Hanson

Our Okanagan Needs Your Input

OurOkanagan.ca is an online tool addressing the challenge of sourcing and promoting local products and services Valley-wide. Its goal is to connect those with needs to those that can address them, creating more opportunity for all.

Please find attached a survey that has been created to gather some information from Okanagan Valley consumers and business owners. This evaluation takes only 3 to 5 minutes to complete and your information will help provide a better understanding of the challenges facing businesses and consumers when buying local. The information will also be used to enhance OurOkanagan.ca (a non-profit service dedicated to linking local consumers and businesses).

Individual responses from this survey will be kept confidential. Aggregate information outlining key trends, challenges and opportunities will be made public to help consumers and businesses learn how to increase local buying. We would appreciate all survey responses completed by July 8th, 2011.

Connect directly to the survey.  http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/83PLWF5

Visitor Centre Report by Sherrie Burechailo

 Sherrie Burechailo

The Penticton & Wine Country Visitor Centre is buzzing with activity this early summer!  The out-of-town visitors have started to return and we are answering tons of questions about wineries, hiking/biking, accommodations and fun things to do.  Among other things, we are anticipating the concert highlight of the year so far; Keith Urban at the South Okanagan Events Centre!  This concert will be a sure sell-out, so get your tickets starting Friday, June 17th at the SOEC box office, or here at the Visitor Centre.

Our racking shelves are full of 2011 publications from the province and beyond.  The newest wine trails, maps, guides and passports will help you cruise the area this summer with friends and family to taste the fruits of labour of our many fabulous wineries.  If driving yourself around doesn't appeal to you, try out one of the many unique shuttle and wine tour packages.  Tour tickets are available through our centre as well, and we are sure to help you find a tour that suits you perfectly.

Staff of the visitor centre is very impressed with the look of the new www.tourismpenticton.com website, and hope you have had a chance to take a look at it.  Our events page is continually changing, so be sure to visit frequently for the most up-to-date information.  More and more people in the community are forwarding their event information to events@penticton.org so that it can get on the website for free.  Thank you for your ongoing support of our work!  With so much to do, it can be hard to remember everything that is going on in our lively town!  That is why Tourism Penticton designed a decal for storefront windows with a QR Code (Quick Response Barcode) that people can scan with their Smartphone, which immediately directs them to a link of our next 7 days of events!   If you are interested in having a decal at your location, please contact Sherrie at supervic@penticton.org or 250-493-4055.

This next month, staff training and education is our top priority.   If you have something new to offer, we would love to know about it.  We are excited about this coming tourist season and look forward to offering our community and our visitors the best service and information we can offer!

Sherrie Burechailo, Manager, Penticton & Wine Country Visitor Centre

Literacy Now

Literacy Now

Literacy Now South Okanagan Similkameen actively supports members of our communities and helps people find out about literacy activities, services and programs across the region.

One of Literacy Now's priorities is Workplace Literacy. Check out this month's Buzz to find out how local businesses have been rewarded for supporting their employees.

Workplace Literacy Recognition Program

Do you know of a business that puts its employees first? Literacy Now wishes to recognize businesses that support a learning environment for staff. Are staff encouraged to increase their basic skills? Are schedules flexible to allow for upgrading or essential skills training? If you know of a business that supports employees in this way, please fill in the nomination form and let us provide the recognition the business deserves.

Curves Cost Money

Curves are difficult to create in bodies, buildings and furniture. But they always attract attention.

Curves are good.
All the best stories have them.

Good movies, plays and books
curve one way then another, taking us in directions we did not anticipate. We can never see what's around the corner.

Curves are the mark of a master.
