Susie Welch

When the Olympic Flame arrives in Penticton on January 25, it will be proudly carried by Susie Welch, nominated as our community torchbearer to light the celebration cauldron for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay.

"We're pleased to announce Susie Welch as Penticton's torchbearer for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games," said Mayor Dan Ashton. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Susie, who is one of 12,000 Canadians chosen to carry the Olympic Flame on the longest domestic torch relay in Olympic history! On January 25th, we want everyone in our community to join together with other Canadians and show the world how inspired we feel by the Olympic Flame and its message of peace, brotherhood and friendship."

To celebrate the arrival of the flame, the community is planning an exciting 4-hour event which will feature and highlight the connections between sport, culture, heritage, and the arts which showcases the best that Penticton has to offer. The theme of the event is Penticton's Olympic Opening Ceremonies and Cultural Olympiad Celebrations.

About an hour into the four-hour celebration program, Susie will carry the Olympic Torch on its final 300 metres to the stage where she will light the 1.3-metre high celebration cauldron, in a move similar to the dramatic highlight of what will occur during the Opening Ceremony for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

The 106-day Olympic Torch Relay, which is presented by Coca-Cola and RBC and supported by the Government of Canada, will visit more than 1,030 communities and places of interest in every province and territory. On February 12, 2010, the Olympic Flame will make its way to downtown Vancouver to light the Olympic Cauldron in a magical and awe-inspiring moment before a television audience of three billion people worldwide, signaling the kick off to the start of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

ImaginePenticton launches Penticton High School Dragon's Den Competition

Penticton Economic Development Services in partnership with Okanagan College, CFDC Okanagan-Similkameen, Business Development Bank of Canada and School District 67 is launching a new exciting entrepreneurial initiative that supports youth in our community. The Penticton Dragon's Den Competition is a young entrepreneur program that creates an opportunity for local secondary school students to develop their business and entrepreneur skills.

In teams of three to four students, they will complete three task categories in Innovation; Marketing and Promotion; and Finance and Design. The program will follow a similar format to the CBC's TV show "The Dragon's Den" teams will be judged on three tasks. Teams will accumulate points and at the end of each task the judges will decide which teams will move on to the next round. In the end, there will be two winning teams; the first place team will be given $2,500 and the second place team will receive $1,000. The team in the final task with the most innovative idea will win $500.

In addition to the prize money, winners will receive local media recognition and an opportunity to meet with a patent lawyer. An awards presentation and luncheon will be held to recognize the students, mentors, judges and sponsors.

Penticton Economic Development Services is very pleased to support this initiative. "We believe that it will serve as an excellent way to highlight the business community of Penticton," said David Arsenault.

Penticton & Wine Country Tourism Report by Kelly Reid Kelly Reid

Thompson Okanagan tourism leaders wrapped up a major two-day conference on the future of their industry Friday after celebrating the best of their own and arming themselves with the latest strategies to keep tourism growing.

More than 180 delegates at the Nov. 12-13 Tourism Industry Summit - hosted in Kelowna by the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) - heard from international speakers about the challenges the industry faces and the strategies they must use to attract visitors to their areas from across Canada and around the world.

TOTA Chair Michael J. Ballingall says the speakers - including a UK-based world tourism expert, the Canada Tourism Commission's director of strategic marketing, and BC's minister of tourism - provided invaluable, leading-edge information at this first annual Tourism Summit.

Ballingall presented three new TOTA awards to stakeholder organizations for outstanding performance in tourism; one of which has a local connection. RPB Hotels & Resorts won the Tourism Industry Partner Award for demonstrating a commitment to the growth of tourism through outstanding contribution to the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association.

The company, which is owned by the Prystay family and operates the Penticton Lakeside Resort, the Kelowna Ramada Lodge, and the Best Western Vernon Lodge - works closely with TOTA to promote not just its own hotels but also tourism throughout the region. The company often hosts familiarization tours for visiting travel media and tour operators, actively participates in TOTA marketing programs, and attends overseas tourism marketing shows.

The TOTA meeting also heard the results of their on-line election for their Board of Directors. Seven board members are elected each year to two-year terms, providing for annual renewal of up to half of the board. Elected to the Board for two-year terms (2009-11) are: Christina Ferreira (Okanagan Wine Festival, Kelowna), Fred Legace (Kamloops Airport), Christopher Nicolson (Tourism Sun Peaks), Roger Sellick (Tourism Kelowna), Lisa Corcoran (Predator Ridge Resort), our own Judy Poole (Penticton & Wine Country Tourism), and Kelly Watt (Sandman Inn, Kelowna). Congratulations Judy!

Competitive Environment

1. "How good am I?" is the second question that every business owner must answer. "How good are my competitors?" is the first.

Like it or not, your competitors set the height of the bar you must jump. The key to success? Choose a town with weak competitors. I've met heavyweight businesspeople who would be featherweights in any town but their own.

It's a weary old saying, but true, "In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king."
