Manager's Report by Lorraine Renyard
Please join us for the HST Information Panel on October 23rd from 8:30 - 10:30 am at the Sandman Hotel.
John Winter, President & CEO of the BC Chamber of Commerce and four panelists from the Manufacturing, Forestry, Retail and Financial/Accounting industries will be in Penticton to discuss the Harmonized Sales Tax. The panelists each will have 10 minutes to speak and they include: John Allan, Council of Forest Industries; Max Logan, Retail Council of Canada; Heather Weber and Meyers Norris Penny; Representative from Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters. "The HST has our support and the support of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, not to mention hundreds of chambers across the country. This is the Voice of Business speaking," said John Winter, President & CEO of the BC Chamber of Commerce. "We're saying it's time to bring the system in line with the 129 other leading world economies employing a value-added tax if we want Canada and its provinces to continue to be competitive." Currently, 29 of the 30 OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries and 129 of the 130 leading economies in the world use a value-added tax system similar to HST. "No one is saying that this tax can be implemented without mitigation strategies," continued Winter. "Mitigation has been a major concern throughout our advocacy efforts on this front, and will continue to be the focus of much of our work with this issue." Please come to hear what this group of experts have to say and come prepared with your questions or concerns. The cost of this event is $15 and you can register at 250-492-4103.
Pre-payment is required. |

Penticton & Wine Country Tourism Report by Kelly Reid
2009 has seen a flurry of marketing and advertising activities. Value-added promotions were estimated at $440,000. Additional ad space garnered this fall has brought that value up to nearly $450,000.
Print advertising featuring high quality, page-dominant ads with value-added promotions continues to be the focus. The campaign continued in Western Living BC and Alberta throughout the summer and fall.
Pay-per-click search engine marketing continued through fall increasing the number of unique visitors to the website www.tourismpenticton.com and moving Penticton up in rankings when visitors are searching the internet for travel options that feature the activities that Penticton can offer.
We hosted several media members from various newspaper and magazine. In addition, Penticton & Wine Country hosted several key journalists for the Okanagan Food & Wine Writers Workshop held here in September.
Penticton & Wine Country Tourism partnered with TOTA and Tourism BC on a B-roll shoot this summer. The footage will be added to the Tourism BC digital asset management system which is available to journalists, during and after the Olympics.

How to Make Money
If it takes money to make money, how does one make money when he has no money at the start?
A person without capital has nothing to leverage but his or her time. This is why millions of Americans (and Canadians) wear the handcuffs of hourly wages.
When I was 14, my life sold for $1.60 an hour. At 18, an hour in the life of Roy H. Williams was selling for three dollars and thirty-five cents. People all around me talked about "the security of a steady paycheck" as though steady and unchanging were a good thing.
But I found a way of escape.
