Did you know that the Chamber of Commerce refers your business when we get inquiries in your particular field or expertise?  Chamber members are businesses that people ask about and trust!  When someone calls our office and asks for a particular service or item, we refer out all members in that particular field. We support our members in many ways, referrals being one of them.

We are happy to announce that we are bringing back a few networking breakfasts this season.  Our "Breakfast Booster" starts our fall season at the Penticton Golf Course Club House on Friday October 2nd, 7am to 8:45am, featuring Penticton's Economic Development Officer David Arsenault. David will enlighten us on all the positive things happening in our area, and will have a short Q & A afterwards.

Pre-registration is required to attend the Breakfast Boosters. Cost is $15 for members and $20 for
non-members.  Call the Chamber office to register, as there is limited seating. Reserve your spot now! There will be no registrations or payments at the door.

Economic Development Report by David Arsenault

David Arsenault

Penticton Economic Development Services continues to execute its strategic plan and have a number of activities planned for development in this fiscal year. On top of these initiatives we continue to field requests for information on potential business opportunities in our community and develop an external marketing strategy. Locally, there have been a number of pieces on economic development in our community through Shaw Cable, the Penticton Herald and other media outlets.

As an organization, we will soon be launching our new website and branding initiative. The creative concept campaign behind the website and branding initiative draws upon attracting new business to Penticton to take advantage of our quality of life. For most of us, we know what living in Penticton is all about but for the visitor to our community living here is only a dream. The new campaign plays upon that dream and focuses on that potential. ImaginePenticton.ca is a brand that allows you to fulfill that dream "Imagine your business in Penticton."

In addition, we are working with the City of Penticton to develop an economic investment incentive strategy and will soon be presenting Mayor and Council with this strategy that is designed to make our community more competitive in the global economy. A more in-depth report will appear in the next Voice newsletter.

Initiatives that are underway in our organization:

·         Working with the Okanagan Research and Innovation Council (ORIC) and the Okanagan Science and Technology Council, we will be hosting a high tech round table for the establishment of a high tech incubator in Penticton. The date of this round table event is October 7, 2009 at the Penticton Chamber Office beginning at 4:00 -6:00 pm.

·         Working with Okanagan College, the local school districts, CFDC and BDC we will be launching a Dragons Den competition at local high schools in January.

·         Working with all the valley EDO's and the valley wide CFDC the development of "OurOkanagan," a local website that will benefit local business to:

o    improve the coordination of local suppliers and purchasers

o    provide easy access to information for inbound investors and potential new businesses to the Valley

o    assist with regional competitiveness

o    facilitate all three areas of the Okanagan Valley Region to work collaboratively together

o    provide economic benefits to Okanagan Valley businesses through increased awareness and access to value-added business services

  • Establish a working committee to develop our regional airport
  •  Working with Leadership and Management BC, CFDC and the Chamber of Commerce host an Economic Summit - titled "Leadership Tactics in Challenging Times" that will take place in Penticton November 4, 2009.

Stay tuned!

Penticton & Wine Country Tourism Report by Kelly Reid Kelly Reid

Tracy Clark is joining us as Tourism Development Services Marketing Assistant.  Born and raised in the Lower Mainland, Tracy moved to the Similkameen Valley in 2003 to begin her career as a newspaper reporter. One year later made the short leap to the Okanagan, where she worked as a reporter at the Penticton Western News for four years. She left that paper in 2008 to pursue a non-profit venture with her cousin. The two women travelled across Canada for four months, raising awareness about global poverty issues, and reaching hundreds of thousands of Canadians. Tracy says she is excited to embark on a new adventure with Penticton and Wine Country Tourism.

"I feel that this new position with tourism development services is a culmination of my skills and experience," she said. "As someone who is passionate about this city and the region, I look forward to helping to showcase Penticton to the rest of the world."

Among Tracy's duties as TDS assistant will be hosting travel trade media, organizing the city's visitor guide, coordinating contests and promotions of the city and representing Penticton and Wine Country tourism at events and marketplaces.

Boldness Buys the Priceless
A Look at Management vs. Leadership

A group of students from the University of Texas recently asked Corrine Taylor to set up an interview with me on the subject of leadership. My schedule hasn't allowed me to do that interview yet, but their request did trigger some thoughts on the subject.

Maybe I'm splitting semantic hairs, but business people who say "leadership" usually mean, "being a good manager."

But leadership and management, in my experience, are virtually opposite skill sets.
