There are many exciting things happening in and around Penticton this month that the whole family can participate in.

"Bird Lovers Tour" or the "Ecosystem Experience" put on by Eco-tours.
These are full day educational excursions with exciting learning opportunities. All tours include transportation and lunch with a portion of the profits being donated to local organizations dedicated to conserving and protecting wildlife and wilderness areas. Call 250-495-0695 for more information.

The Kettle Valley Rail Trail has always been a popular bike ride with the locals and this year we are watching it become a favourite for the tourists as well.  Freedom Bike Shop (250-493-0686) and Fun City Bike Rentals (250-462-1151) will rent you the bike for the day and Ambrosia Tours (250-492-1095) will drop you off at your location of choice. A few of those options are Myra Canyon or Chute Lake Resort for a leisurely scenic ride back to Penticton or anywhere along Naramata Road for your Wine Tour by bike.

Casabella Princess has a new family package. When you purchase 2 adult tickets for the 1 hour scenic cruise, you can get up to 3 kids free.  These scenic tours leave the Penticton Marina at 2 pm daily during the summer. And every Friday night they have a 2 hour dinner cruise. Call 250-492-4090 to book your tour of interest.

The 16th Annual Beach Blanket Film Festival is this weekend at Okanagan Lake Park.  They have a different film planned for each day Friday, Saturday and Sunday starting at 10 pm. You can purchase your tickets ($10 nightly) at the gate or at the Penticton Lakeside Resort.

You can also join the notorious Garnett Valley Gang for their thrilling "Old West" experience on the Kettle Valley Train. You'll enjoy the Gang's daring horsemanship and antics on the train as they rob passengers for local charities. This adventure includes a BBQ dinner and entertainment. These tickets go fast so please book your tickets by calling 1-877-494-8424.

Many Hats Theatre is presenting "The Wild Guys" until the 25th of July so you still have time to purchase your tickets. This play takes an outrageously funny look at exactly what happens to four men who are confused at where their life's path has taken them and begin to look for answers in all the wrong places. Call 250-493-3044 to pick up your tickets.

Economic Development Report by David Arsenault

David Arsenault
The recent announcement of trailer manufacturer Peerless Ltd. adds fuel to the argument that the end is now near and shows that some in the business community are confident that we will see the light at the end of the tunnel. The McCoy Corporation has decided to move its entire operation to Penticton allowing the company to keep its engineering department close to its manufacturing operations. Peerless has been in existence for over 60 years and has a 60,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility in the industrial area of Penticton. Its innovative trailer designs have put it in the forefront of trailer manufacturing and it is looking at diversifying its products to an even larger global market.

It is interesting that this company has shown some confidence in our community given the current economic situation. I guess that in these turbulent times entrepreneurs still see Penticton as an attractive opportunity to enjoy an exceptional quality of life while living in an area that is the best place on earth (stealing the province's tagline).

Locally, we still see this business confidence improving in our community and our office has had a number of business inquiries. As an organization we recently held a strategic visioning session to identify key areas for business attraction in the community. The outcome of this session with the economic advisory committee and City of Penticton has been the identification 6 high priority items for business attraction to Penticton:

1.       Hotel and Accommodations attraction
2.       Okanagan College Expansion and spin off
          opportunities
3.       Manufacturing and Industry support
4.       Downtown Revitalization
5.       Airport enhancement strategy
6.       Business Attraction Incentives strategy

It should also be noted that the committee also identified some medium and low priorities which will require some development to meet the goals and mandate of the organization. Stay tuned!

Crime Tip of the Month Better Business Bureau

You Can Protect Yourself

Identity theft is the fastest growing type of fraud. Protect your precious personal information. Ask all marketing, research or charity callers for:
  • Detailed, written information that you can check yourself;
  • Time to think about the offer. Scam artists pressure you for an answer, saying the offer will expire or go to the next person if you don't act now;
  • Valid references and the means to contact them; and,
  • A call-back number. But beware - a crook can give you a number where a colleague is standing by to finish taking your money.

Shred unwanted personal documents such as transaction records, credit applications, insurance forms, cheques, financial statements and tax returns.

Why I Have No Goals

Maybe it's because I was a young adult in the Dress-for-Success, go-go 80's and retain vivid memories of those hollow days.

Maybe it's because Pennie and I had close friends who stepped on the landmines of "Get Rich in Real Estate With No Money Down," "How To Make Millions Selling Soap," and other glistening schemes promoted by effervescent conmen with perfect teeth who said, "You can do it. You're a winner."

Maybe it's because the positive-thinking cult believes Man is God and this disturbs me to the core of my soul.
