| Literacy Now
May 1st marked an end and also a new beginning for Literacy Now in the South Okanangan-Similkameen Region.
Caroline Pennelli has completed her productive and successful year as the Community Outreach Co-ordinator for the South Okanagan-Similkameen Region and has begun a new job as a Vice Principal in School District 53. Caroline accomplished a great deal in her role including co-ordinating our first Family Literacy Day event held at Cherry Lane Shopping Centre in Penticton and creating 3 sub-committees to work on specific areas of our Community Literacy Plan: Adult/Workplace Literacy, Health Literacy and Family Literacy. On behalf of the whole Literacy Now SO-S Task Group, thank you Caroline for the great progress you made in our Community Literacy Plan!
We have a new Literacy Now Co-ordinator, Naomi Ludington. Naomi has made Penticton her home for the past 10 years. She is a parent, educator, and administrator and has always had a keen interest in literacy issues. Naomi has been volunteering on the Literacy Now Family Literacy Sub-committee during the past year and is thrilled to be taking on the Co-ordinator role for the next phase of our Community Literacy Plan.

Crime Tip of the Month
#1
Internet Fraud
The Internet has provided scam artists with a whole new toolbox for targeting victims. It has spawned numerous online scams and new jargon to describe them, such as phishing, spoofing, bogus websites and spyware.
Phishing and Spoofing: scammers use emails to "fish" the Internet hoping to hook you into giving up your login, password, and/or credit card information. The phisher sends an email impersonating a legitimate company (called phishing) such as a financial institution or Ebay. The email then directs you to a "spoofed", or look-alike website to update your account information. The bogus site looks almost identical to the legitimate site.
Bogus Websites: be especially wary of sites that impersonate legitimate websites, such as a third party payment service for online auctions or an escrow service that is supposed to hold the received funds until a transaction item is received.
Spyware: software that covertly gathers your information, such as passwords and credit card numbers, through your Internet connection without your knowledge.
Quick Tip: Do not respond to, forward, or open attachments in unsolicited (phishing) emails. Legitimate financial institutions or government departments will NOT seek your personal information through unsolicited email. When purchasing or selling online, ensure any services you use have a privacy policy, terms of agreement and a customer service line.

Style Tips for Ad Writers
Your unconscious writing style is how you write when you're simply being yourself. You also have a formal style and you might even have a whimsical style. But three styles is usually as good as it gets.
Language, however, is extraordinarily plastic. You can make it do anything you want. With a little conscious effort, you can speak and write in a thousand voices. The possibilities are intoxicating.
I'm going to give you 10 ways to expand your literary voice. But please, I'm begging you, don't get legalistic or analytical with this stuff. Style is like a frog; you can dissect the thing, but it dies in the process. Read more |
