The Penticton & Wine Country Chamber of Commerce was well represented at the recent Canadian Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting.

President-Elect, Jason Cox and Manager, Lorraine Renyard both sat in the all day Policy Debate session along with several other representatives of BC Chambers.

One specific proposed resolution that was up for debate is important to the Okanagan's growing wine industry. It is a discussion paper with recommendations to the Federal Government about removing the inter-Provincial trade barriers to the sales of 100% Canadian Wine.

Every year there are proposed resolutions that create heated debate ranging from the issue of the GST and how it should be applied or Fiscal Policy on managing the Government's debt reduction. Our transportation infrastructure, whether by air or road, always comes up as an issue for debate. Whatever the issue the discussions presented are always lively, and many times offering up opinions that may have been missed initially.

At the end of the yearly policy debate session we have created a book of policies for the Canadian Chamber Board of Directors and staff to take to every meeting with Government officials to lobby on our behalf for change.

It is the power of our collective membership in the BC Chamber of Commerce and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce that we can lobby Government and successfully affect change.

Crime Tip of the Month Better Business Bureau

Scam artists are always adding new twists and finding more victims. The adage that "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is" applies today more than ever.

The best way to protect yourself is knowledge - know the danger signs and exercise caution at all times.

Over the next ten months, we will be listing the Top 10 Scams identified by the Better Business Bureau and how you can ensure that you do not become a victim.

Bogus Charities
Within days of any natural or man-made disaster, some people will attempt to take advantage of others' eagerness to assist victims of the tragedy. Be wary of appeals that are long on emotion but short on what the charity will do to address the specific disaster. Watch out for bogus charities that use legitimate sounding names or those that don't give enough detail about their organization. Be aware that third party fund raisers who solicit donations from BC consumers require licences.

Quick Tip: Do not give donations over the phone or at the door. Ask for the organization to mail its information package to you so that you can check it out with the BBB. Check to see if the charity is registered with the Canada Revenue Agency (toll-free 1-800-267-2384; www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tax/charities).

Unlock your Company's Potential

When Rene came to JobWave, she had been a single, stay-at-home mother for 10 years. When she was accepted into the program, she felt she had nothing to offer an employer. But the JobWave team helped Rene get back in touch with her employment-related abilities, and she supplemented her existing skills with program workshops. As a result, Renee was offered an office-manager position in Kelowna.

In our tight labour market, how can you recruit skilled and enthusiastic workers like Renee? Here are a few hiring tips from our new JobWave website, at www.jobwavebc.com.

Rene says of her JobWave experience, "I think JobWave is an amazing program. I've gotten a good job with benefits; I now have higher self esteem and better social skills. I feel better mentally and physically about my life."

JobWave is delivered by WCG International HR Solutions in partnership with the Ministry of Housing and Social Development. WCG has helped employers fill over 68,000 job openings since 1995. For more information, call us today at 1-888-JOBWAVE.

Some Things There Are That Last Forever

I recently asked a group of 14 men to share a snapshot from their photo albums of random memory, a vivid image, unfaded, a moment inexplicable, captured forever by a long-ago click of that camera in the brain.

Here's what they handed me on scraps of paper:
