Fight Financial Crime
Be Part of the Solution

On August 6 at 8:30 am, the Penticton & Wine Country Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Penticton Association are partnering to bring you the RCMP's Merchants Against Money Laundering workshop.

This 45 minute workshop will help us understand why criminals launder money, the methods they use, how to identify a suspicious transaction and how your business can be used to facilitate the laundering process.

Canadian businesses are being victimized, often unknowingly, by organized crime. By putting in place the right due diligence procedures, businesses can help detect and deter debit card skimming, identity theft, and prevent the circulation of counterfeit currency.

The Organized Crime Unit of the RCMP will be in Penticton on Wednesday, August 6th at 8:30 am in the Chamber of Commerce Boardroom on the second floor of the Wine Country Visitor Centre. This workshop is free of charge and it is open to everyone. Please call (250) 492-4103 to reserve your seat.

Literacy Now Co-ordinator hired

The Literacy Now Task Force has hired a coordinator for the South Okanagan Similkameen region. Caroline Pennelli, resides in Oliver and is formerly a teacher with 22 years of education, consulting, writing and administrative experience.

Caroline will continue with a project that was started in 2007, in which communities and organizations across the region engaged in the development of a Literacy Now plan. The resulting document, "A Tapestry of Stories", can be viewed on the home page of the  www.penticton.org website.

The mandate of Literacy Now, under the 2010 Legacies Now umbrella, is to help communities assess local needs, build on existing literacy work and address important gaps in literacy provision. Penticton's Literacy Now Task Group is very excited to welcome Caroline to our team and continue the work that was started last year.  For further information on how you can get involved with Literacy in your community, Caroline can be reached at literacynowsos@gmail.com

Ambassador of the Month
 Joe Fouchard

Joe Fouchard has been a Chamber Ambassador for the past 3 years. He helps out at the door for the Chamber Business after Business events and also encourages the networking process amongst the attendees.  For the past 4 years he has been retired, but continues to be busy and involved in the community.

With a degree in Recreational Education from UBC, Joe chose to follow his passion for people and business. Along with his wife Cathy, they owned and operated McDonald's restaurants in Prince George and Penticton/Summerland for nearly 30 years. Joe focused his attention on the numbers, effective scheduling, appropriate ordering, preventative maintenance, marketing and overall operations of the 3 local restaurants and 160 employees. Joe still uses his experience to consult with businesses that need help making their businesses more profitable and efficient.

In his spare time Joe enjoys travelling, gardening, golf, pool, and spending time with his family and friends.

Joe volunteers his time to organizations such as Iron Club, OSNS, South Okanagan Wine Society, Whiskey Tasting Society, and the Chamber of Commerce.

Joe is a great asset to our team of volunteers!

Are you interested in becoming a Chamber Ambassador? We are currently looking for volunteers. Please call Andrea Davison at (250) 492-4103 for more information.
Business After Business

KVR Pub/Ramada Inn & Suites
The Kettle Valley Station Pub at the Ramada Inn & Suites was the perfect setting for the last Business After Business before the summer.

Almost 200 guests were treated to
appetizers from the KVR Pub while mingling poolside. Attendees got a chance to view two of their suites, and listened to great music while enjoying Ramada's wonderful courtyard.

Have a great summer everyone. See you in the fall!

WCG's JobWave Changes Lives
with the Support of Local Chambers

"Look at me now!" says Shawna. As a single mother who had been out of the workforce for four years, Shawna was suffering from feelings of low self-esteem and inadequacy when she came to JobWave. Today, Shawna is literally a different person. With the support of the JobWave team and its valued partners, Shawna now feels "like a somebody."

"How others perceive me has changed. I walk tall. I used to look down, avoid everything and everybody and now I can look people in the eye . . . My whole attitude and outlook has changed."

At WCG, partnerships are integral to our ongoing success. Our alliance with 33 Chambers of Commerce, 65,000 businesses and 349 local service providers help us deliver exceptional JobWave and Triumph programming in more than 250 communities across British Columbia.

Make Your Mission Statement Ring

"The fundamental shortcoming of most mission statements is that everyone expects them to be highfalutin and all-encompassing. The result is a long, boring, commonplace and pointless joke. Companies are all writing the same mediocre stuff."
