President's Message by Randy Kowalchuk

Randy Kowalchuk

I am looking forward to my tenure as President of the Penticton & Wine Country Chamber of Commerce. I would like to get the year off to a good start by meeting with each Director to better understand their expectations and where they would like to fit into the organization. The Chamber Board of Directors consist of a very diverse group of people with some tremendous expertise in their fields. I think it is important to tap into that expertise allowing each Director to contribute while adding to the strength of the Chamber.

The new Board of Directors will be attending the annual Vision Session at the beginning of January and I believe these conversations will encourage some very open and honest dialogue around the table. That in turn, will go along way to developing some strong goals.

On behalf of the Board of Directors I wish you a very prosperous Christmas season and New Year.

Christmas Mixer

On Thursday November 29th, we held our Christmas Mixer at the Penticton Lakeside Resort.

We are happy to report that the turnout was fantastic! Almost 200 people enjoyed the tasty food and refreshments. Most of all, it was great to mix and mingle with our fellow Chamber members while viewing the Lakeside's beautifully renovated guest rooms.

A big thank you to all who attended and especially to the Penticton Lakeside Resort for hosting such a successful event and getting us in the holiday spirit!

Okanagan-Similkameen Mobile Business Licence Pilot Project

The Okanagan-Similkameen Mobile Business Licence Pilot Project will be launched on January 1, 2008.  Under this Pilot Project, eligible businesses may purchase a Mobile Business Licence allowing them to work in all participating communities.

In order to ensure the widest possible uptake, we encourage you to inform your eligible business clients of this initiative.

The Okanagan-Similkameen Mobile Business Licence Pilot Project represents a cooperative and ambitious effort on behalf of business stakeholders, local governments, and the Province of British Columbia to streamline the municipal business licencing process and enhance regional economic development.  Working together, we will improve government regulatory process, build a stronger economy, and demonstrate economic leadership.

As an organization committed to business success, this Pilot will enhance the work of the Chamber by saving businesses time and reducing their red tape.

If you have any questions, please contact Nicola Lemmer, Project Director, at (250) 387-1548.

Government tables Legislation to Combat Identity Theft

On November 21st, the government introduced legislation (Bill C-27, An Act to amend the Criminal Code, identity theft and related misconduct) that is designed to combat identity theft. This step is welcomed by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce as reflected in the policy resolution entitled "Preventing Identity Theft" that was adopted at the 2007 AGM. This proposed legislation would create three new offenses directly targeting aspects of the identity theft problem, all of which would carry five-year maximum sentences.
