Canadian Chamber AGM
The Canadian Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting held in Markham, Ontario this year had the highest attendance with 378 members representing well over 200 chambers across Canada. We heard from speakers like the Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance and Presidents and CEO's of companies like General Electric and Canadian Pacific. The theme was "Winning Ways" Productivity, Diversity and Competitiveness so we heard how these major companies were able to gain in their market. The leader that stood out was kayaker, Adam van Koeverden, Canada's lone double medalist at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Adam is looking forward to representing Canada in 2010. He says that "his medals are only a quarter of an inch thick when stacked together, but seem to make his voice a lot louder when used as a podium."
Perrin Beatty has been the Canadian Chamber's new CEO and President for the past month and we had the opportunity to hear how he was going to lead the National Chamber into the future. John Peller, CEO and President of Andrew Peller Ltd. was inducted as the new Chair for 2007/08.
The resolution session went smoothly passing such resolutions as the Canadian Transport Funding referring to security put forward by the Kelowna Chamber or the National Housing Strategy to End Homelessness put forward by the Victoria Chamber. The issue of our need for an accessible and efficient Canadian Passport system was discussed with recommendations to ask for a 10-year validity date and for a more timely turn-around on applications.
It was a great networking event and I appreciate the opportunity to attend. |

Beware of Unauthorized Ticket Sales and Hospitality Packages for the 2010 Winter Games
The Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) recently advised the Canadian Chamber of Commerce that there are a number of organizations offering ticket and hospitality packages to the 2010 Winter Games, or otherwise claiming to be able to provide tickets in the future. Some of these organizations are also producing sales materials that utilize Olympic branding and make clear reference to their ability to provide full-service packages to Vancouver 2010 marquee events such as the Opening Ceremony and the men's gold medal hockey game.
But be aware . . . none of these companies are officially authorized as ticket or hospitality package suppliers to VANOC, and none of these companies possess any special rights to purchase tickets. Please note that in purchasing tickets from any unauthorized source, buyers will be taking the risk that these tickets may not be valid for entry. Furthermore, the 2010 Winter Games ticketing program has not yet been launched, and specific information regarding Games' tickets, including pricing and how to purchase tickets, will not be available until the fall of 2007.
VANOC's Official Supporter, Jet Set Sports, along with its affiliate company CoSport is the only company authorized to develop and supply official Vancouver 2010 hospitality packages. These packages provide spectators with the ability to purchase event tickets for the 2010 Winter Games in combination with transportation, lodging and food and beverage services. Any other individual or organization claiming to have legitimate access to Games tickets is making that claim falsely.
To ensure a positive 2010 Winter Games experience, VANOC recommends that you not deal with unauthorized parties.
Visit the Vancouver 2010 website www.vancouver2010.com - and subscribe to receive important ticketing information and announcements as they happen. You may also call VANOC at (778) 328-2010 with questions. |

You Can Take it With you!
When employees leave your firm, they may be entitled to on-going life insurance because of their participation in your group plan. Their coverage can be 'converted' to an individual policy for the same amount, with the employee paying all future premiums. The advantage to the employee is that this coverage is guaranteed, if the employee applies for it within 30 days of leaving your company.
A converted policy can provide a level of coverage appropriate for retirement. Conversion benefits also suit some people's circumstances before retirement. Those who have health issues may not find reasonably priced life insurance, if they can find any at all. Others may need a life insurance policy with a specific purpose in mind, like those required to keep coverage for the benefit of an ex-spouse, as a condition of divorce.
But the key to conversion is timing. The employee's application and initial premium cheque must reach the insurer within 30 days of the end of employment. After that, the group benefit cannot be converted, leaving the individual to try to find coverage on his or her own.
If an individual leaves your company without being made aware the guaranteed benefit is available, your company leaves the door open to a possible legal challenge down the road. With that in mind, the Chambers Plan offers a sample letter employers can use. When an employee declines conversion, he or she signs the letter, acknowledging the offer. Completed forms are worth keeping with the departed employee's file for a period of time.
Remember, whether or not an individual converts the group life benefit, there's no cost to the employer. And it's easy to make the offer a routine part of your process when an individual leaves your company.
