United Way receives "Save Our Planet Award" at luncheon

At the April Women in Business luncheon, United Way of Monroe County received a "Save Our Planet Award" from the Greater Pocono Chamber of Commerce's Environmental Committee. The honor recognized our "green efforts" such as office recycling, paperless communications, and 2011 Day of Caring projects that enhanced and beautified the environment.

Accepting the award were Executive Director Mathilda Sheptak and Chris Grape-Garvey, communications and community outreach director. The luncheon was held at Mount Airy Casino Resort and was sponsored by the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau and Brodhead Creek Regional Authority.

United Way won in the nonprofit category, specifically for two challenging environmental projects that were completed during a rainy Day of Caring last September.

Volunteers undertook a major trash cleanup along the pristine Pocono Creek in Stroud Township and rerouted/reclaimed a trail for mountain biking at Big Pocono State Park in Tannersville. All the volunteers, businesses and organizations involved that day share in this award with the United Way.
