Fisker battles problems as the Karma finally lurches toward launch
Surprise! Surprise!  This should really be no surprise as if starting a new automobile company was ever easy.  Fisker will most likely stumble around until finally rescued by a major European auto maker (perhaps Mercedes Benz) for "fifty-cent dollars".  Many of those dollars will be yours and mine.  All Henrik Fisker wants is to build his plug-in hybrid cars and deliver them to customers--some of whom have been waiting three years since plunking down $5,000 deposits. Read More...
NASCAR: Ford brings back brand identity with 2013 Fusion Sprint Cup car
Another example of "jumping the gun" on the new Ford Fusion as the NASCAR Sprint Cup car introduction.  Showing it in January as a 2013 model, while newsworthy today, seems a bit aggressive since it won't get into competition until 2013 Daytona 500 next February.  In the mean time Ford could suffer some humiliating setbacks with their "old-fashioned, out-of-date, useless" 2012 model.  Seems to me racecar development should be done behind the scenes and not in front of the public when they can't "buy it". JW

Ford unveiled the 2013 Ford Fusion NASCAR Sprint Cup car on Tuesday as part of the Charlotte Motor Speedway Media Tour. The new car is the product of an effort by Ford designers to bring brand identity back to the sport.

Ford expects Fusion to grab profits without Camry's crown The old phrase "Don't count your chickens until they're hatched." certainly comes to mind as we listened to and read all of the predicted boasts about the sales success of the new 2013 Fusion.

While the inevitable comparison to the 1986 Ford Taurus introduction is pertinent, that was then and this is now.  Certainly Toyota, Honda, Nissan, GM and VW et al are not going to roll over and say "oops we got got scooped". JW

GM Sees Politics in Criticism
CEO Akerson to Defend Chevy Volt, Call U.S. Safety Probe Politically Motivated
In somewhat of a shock to the US Advertising Community GM has chosen the European based Media-Agency, Aegis' Carat, to handle its $3-billion global buying efforts.  Defending his decision, GM's Global CMO Joel Ewanick, stressed the term "Global".

The Aegis' Group  will not be involved in the Creative product, particularly for Chevrolet.  That choice is still under consideration.  Ewanick that many of the strong presentations by other media-buying groups were handicapped by their existing competitive automotive efforts.

This is a very significant assignment and will result in a lot of inside industry job switching. JW

Are the Nürburgring's public days numbered?
If you ever had any desire to take a ride around Germany's world famous Nurburgring racetrack, you better think about doing it soon.

The attached story from AutoWeek suggests that public availability of the track may soon end.   Once again, money maybe the culprit. JW

AutoWeek | January 23, 2012

Are the pays-your-money, takes-your-life-in-your-hands days of the Nürburgring's touristenfahren (tourist drives) numbered? According to United Kingdom-based motoring site Pistonheads, there's real worry in the Eifel Mountains that that could be the case.

The culprit? At a very base level, it's the number that enthusiasts love to debate--how quickly a car can lap the Green Hell, and the manufacturer bragging rights that come from having a car's suspension tuned on the famed circuit. Read more...
