Chet WaldenAs I prepare to write this month's message, an empty page before me, I think about all the things I want to share with you. And my mind reflects back to the beginning of the year:

We were bombarded by negativity. The global news was worse than the national news. Reporters kept reminding us of the high unemployment rates, and no one knew what was to happen with taxes-except that they weren't going away. Every day was some new catastrophe on the economic front. It reminded me that in universal truth, if we allow ourselves to believe that kind of poppy cock, it is only a matter of time before those thoughts manifest themselves into reality.

As business owners, we have always had our challenges. Sure, deals are still a bit harder to get done, but we get them closed anyway. We know to remain ever positive about the outcome and focus on what we do best. We are an elite group of professionals dedicated to providing the highest level of M&A services possible.

As the M&A Source Fall Conference is fast approaching, our association management office is buzzing with activity! We recently opened registration for the conference, which will be held November 7th through 9th at the Bally's Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Once you click on the link, you will be asked to make a profile on the registration website. After you have done that, you are free to customize your conference experience-whether you want to attend any of the four courses offered, bring a guest, or sit for the CBI exam. The member discount is available for both M&A Source and IBBA members, and anyone who registers before October 4th will receive our Early Bird pricing. With these options in place, you could register today for the conference at a significant discount.

Aside from gearing up for the conference, we are hard at work on setting up a new Association Management System (AMS) and website for both the M&A Source and IBBA. While we have only just begun the process, and we foresee some bumps along the road, we truly believe both associations will be better off for it-allowing for operations to run smoothly and members to easily access important information regarding their membership and certification.

IBBA Chairman's Report
Pino Bacinello, CBI, M&AMI, CMEA, CSBA

Pino

Greetings!

With almost nine months of 2012 gone, it truly does feel like we are pregnant, at least as it has been explained to me!

We are almost there!  Much work has been done by both the IBBA and M&A Source to not only increase and enhance the member benefits, but also to get things back under fiscal control.

Though it has been an expensive year from an administrative cost, resulting from the contractual obligations and fee overlap required to transition, I believe we are in a much better place now, with both the M&A Source and IBBA enjoying the benefits of respect and a great working relationship that will translate in prosperous years to come. Sometimes, its "pay now or pay more later." We are not through the storm, but we believe the ship is pointed in the right direction, and we hope the economy will follow suit. (Note: I did not say it the other way around!)

Deal Makers & Golf

For all you non-golfers out there, please bear with me. Although this article references golf and golfers, it is really about your approach to your practice. So, keep an open mind and hang in there with me for a couple of minutes.

In April 2011, John Feinstein, contributor to GolfChannel.com, wrote an article entitled "The Major Difference between Tiger and Phil." Just before that year's Masters Tournament, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson were asked what it means to come back to Augusta each spring. Phil answered by saying, "when I drive down Magnolia Lane, I get re-energized with the game of golf. I could easily forget week in and week out playing the PGA Tour how lucky I am to play the game. All of the feelings come back when I drive down Magnolia Lane. It just reinvigorates my passion for the game."

Tiger was asked to respond to Mickelson's answer. "Driving down Magnolia Lane is just looking at some trees, really. The golf course is where I do my work and that's what is exciting to me. I love walking into that clubhouse and going straight into the golf course. I'm excited just thinking about going out there because that, to me, is the rush-getting out there and playing the golf course."

Education Chair's Report
George A. Petrulis, M&AMI

Our fearless leader, Chet Walden, ("Bless his heart") M&A Source Chairman, asked that I provide an update on the M&A Source courses to be offered at the Las Vegas conference. We are pleased to make you aware that the MA& Source will offer four courses at the conference.

The course presenters are seasoned M&A professionals that not only present subject matter expertise, but are also happy to share their war stories that will provide a value added learning experience for the participants. Three of the courses are brand new, and were specially developed for the Las Vegas event. The fourth course was very popular and well received when it was initially presented three conferences ago. The four courses will be taught on the mornings of Wednesday, November 7th and Friday, November 9th.

All of the courses offer four hours of credit for certification purposes. The following is a brief overview of the presentations:

Horray for the USA!
Kevin Dempsey, CBI, CMC, CMEA

Having just returned from almost three weeks in China, I must say that it is great to be back in the USA, but what an interesting country! And still a bargain for travel.

While you still have your health, I strongly suggest you go and see, among many sights: the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Terracotta Warriors, Tibet, the panda bears, and cities as beautiful as and rich with history as Shanghai.  The thousands of years of history of China are unmatched.

Things I found lacking there were many things that I have taken for granted here.  Like the First Amendment and our free market place.  Some opinions that I came away with may be erroneous but these are the things that I observed.

M&AMI Certification Revisions and Updates
Gary Papay, M&AMI
Joe Lindsey, M&AMI, CBI

The Merger & Acquisition Master Intermediary (M&AMI) certification is an elite designation that affords professional growth and marketability unlike any other in the M&A profession. Because the M&AMI designation is the only M&A credential to require both educational credits and the successful completion of multiple middle-market transactions, this title distinguishes its holders as seasoned intermediary professionals who have a strong passion for the M&A Source and M&A work.

Members of the M&A Source can continue to earn their M&AMI designation through the "Education Track" or the "Experience Track" as noted in the table below. If you are new to the profession, it is highly recommended that you join the IBBA and obtain the Certified Business Intermediary (CBI) designation which will set the stage for increased success in middle market transactions.

After much review and deliberation, The M&A Source Board of Directors is pleased to announce several changes and updates to the M&AMI program. Highlights of the program changes are as follows:
