Chairman's Message
Pino Bacinello, CBI, M&AMI, CMEA, CSBA

Pino

Firstly, thank you for the well wishes from so many of you.

It has been a month now, and we have had our first board meeting on January 10th where amongst other business we also agreed to the ballot that was recently sent out to you all on the October proposed bylaw changes.

I know this has been a subject of some controversy and opinions. The board and I look forward to your collective decision and moving forward in harmony and collaboration with the leadership of M&A Source. I encourage each of you to participate in the vote as we need to hear from you!

Lanza2Q)  What is the one thing you are most proud of you've accomplished inside and outside the industry?

A)  I am most proud of  the family I have been blessed with.  The opportunity to raise and influence my four sons has given me great satisfaction.   The decision to make the transition into this industry provided me the venue to tap into my past experience in various industries and disciplines;  it has given me an advantage  in excelling in this industry.   I genuinely enjoy working with people and developing  relationships as I witness to accomplished individuals.  Helping them achieve their goal  with the process of selling their businesses as they pass on their legacy  has been mutually rewarding.

CBI Educational Summit - April 17-20
Course 210, 220 & 221

IBBA UniversityThe IBBA will be holding the first of two Educational Summits at IBBA Headquarters April 17 - 20 in Chicago, IL.  If you are interested in earning your CBI this is an excellent opportunity to take the core required courses (210, 220 & 221) at one time.

Registration will be available soon on the IBBA Website.  The price will be $750 for all three courses and breakfast & lunch for the 4 days.  That's over $200 less than the combined course cost if taken at a conference.

These three courses will not be held at our San Antonio conference, so if you're interested in earning your CBI you should really consider this event.

We also plan on holding the Educational Summit a second time in 2012 sometime this fall.  It will also be held in Chicago at IBBA Headquarters.

For more information please contact headquarters at: 888-686-4222.

Spring 2012 Conference
Save the Date: June 4 - 9

San Antonio
We are currently working on the schedule of events and details for our next conference in San Antonio, TX.  More information will be available soon, but we want to make sure that you save the first full week in June for the event.

The 2012 Conference format will be different from previous years.  There will be one primary conference with the IBBA & M&A Source in 2012.  That will be the San Antonio Event.  It will be structured like previous IBBA Conferences where we have educational courses, workshops, networking events and a trade fair.  There will also be the typical M&A Source events: Expo, panel discussions & educational courses.

There will not be an IBBA event in November of 2012.  The M&A Source is planning on having an event November 7 - 11.  More information about the June 2012 San Antonio event will be available soon and we're excited to announce the plans to you.  - IBBA Staff

Bushkie...A few of the projects that are currently underway:

We are working on a quarterly survey for our members that will provide us data to use with the media, so IBBA and it's members can be recognized as the "voice" of small business sales throughout the US.  It will also give each member some insight into current industry trends and give potential sponsors the answers they are looking for to encourage sponsorship.

We will also be doing professional video testimonials of our members at the San Antonio conference... there may be a way to create a short video on you and your company at no cost to you if you attend the conference... stay tuned for more details.

Barbara & Tom Cutting the IBBA 25th Anniversary Cake

I think the two things we would both agree are our most satisfying accomplishments would be the success of the IBBA which we basically started and ran for 10 years; and the success of Business Brokerage Press. The IBBA filled a huge void and certainly helped bring the industry together and unify it...

...I have been involved in business brokerage for 45+ years. Except for a year or two working for Dun & Bradstreet, I have spent my entire working life involved in business brokerage or related areas (and I still am). From working at a desk as an agent in Anaheim, California to opening my own office, expanding to eight offices - all in the greater Los Angeles area, selling those to a small NASDQ listed company, growing that to 50 offices in eight states, to moving to New England to co-found VR Business Brokers. When I left in 1983, we had we had 300 + offices. Business Brokerage Press was started in that same year and is still going strong. Our son Ron is slowly taking over and is the fourth generation to be in business brokerage related businesses...

We are adding a new feature beginning this month to introduce you to our IBBA Board Members; George Lanza, our incoming Chair next year is an appropriate choice. Our Member Spotlight highlights the remarkable couple that launched our Association from their dining room table; Tom and Barbara West. In the months that follow we will have ongoing reports on Membership, Marcie Woolworth; Marketing, Scott Bushkie; and Steve Wain reporting on Technology.

Last month I discussed Yesterday/Today/Tomorrow as you begin the New Year. In this issue my tip is to form an Advisory Board of Directors.

Getting the Most From Your Membership
Sean Samet, MBA
IBBA Director of Operations

SeanThe IBBA has been working hard over the last few years to make membership in the organization as rewarding as possible for you.  This means providing you with the best tools for your practice as well as promoting the business brokerage profession to the business community.  I have the opportunity to speak with members on a regular basis and I don't think that everyone understands the excellent benefits & programs that are available to you as a member.  In this month's article I will highlight 3.  They are all tools that will help your business operate more smoothly and professionally and one will even help brand the IBBA, M&A Source, CBI & M&AMI to business owners and business buyers.

  1. ShareFile VDR - We introduced this benefit over a year ago, but many members are still not aware that they receive a free Virtual Data Room from Sharefile as part of their IBBA membership. You just need to email me or HQ to request it to be activated.  This is an excellent tool to improve the professionalism of your communications with clients and can help you remain organized throughout your transactions.  If you don't know what a Virtual Data Room is, you should.
  2. Linking your IBBA Business Listings with BizBuySell.  If you have a membership with BizBuySell to list your business opportunities then you should take 5 minutes to link your account with IBBA.  You'll receive the benefit of listings that automatically populate on the IBBA website.  You'll also be rewarded with IBBA, M&A Source, CBI or M&AMI logos on your BizBuySell listings that differentiate yourself from non members and the for sale by owner listings out there.  This is also an excellent way for IBBA to brand its membership to our customers, business buyers & sellers.  If you haven't already done so, please link your account.  You can contact HQ if you have any questions.
  3. BVR - Pratt's Stats - Finding transaction information on privately held businesses is difficult and can also be expensive.  As an IBBA member, if you submit a deal to the Pratt's Stats database you'll receive 3 months of access to the database.  You'll also help all of your fellow brokers by helping to build a stronger database of information on business transactions.

That's it for this month.  I know that many of you are already aware of these three benefits and are happily using them.  I encourage anyone that isn't familiar with these benefits to contact me, HQ or a fellow member for more information.
