It feels like spring is just around the corner! In the tradition of the changes that spring brings, you will start to notice some changes in the store. Let us know what you think if you notice anything different.
Unfortunately, this is also the time of year that is hardest for local farmers to supply local produce. They are busy prepping their greenhouses, starting seeds and getting ready for the Spring growing season. We will not have any local produce on our shelves for at least another month. Our produce boxes will continue to offer a fresh variety of fruits and vegetables, if you have not tried a produce box but would like to, please sign up at the cash register.
Make sure you scroll all the way down to the bottom of this email for a special treat...

Local honey!
"Fraudulent" or tainted honey has been in the news in the past few months. Some concerns have risen regarding the contents of honey shipped from other countries. The pre-packaged honey often available in most grocery store chains likely contains honey from other countries. Central Illinois people "in the know" don't worry about what unknowns their honey bears contain because they get their honey at Common Ground! We have a bulk honey container filled with raw honey provided by SASSY HONEY Apiaries. We also have smaller, pre-packaged containers found a few shelves away which are also filled with locally produced SASSY HONEY goodness.
If you are interested in giving the bulk honey a try, bring in an empty, clean container and ask one of our staff to weigh it for you. You then fill it with sweet, local honey and when you check-out, the amount of your empty container is subtracted from your total. Should you realize you forgot your container at home, we do keep extra donated containers at the bulk honey station. You can use any container you find suitable but we do recommend using something with a tight seal so that it doesn't leak on your way home.

Consumer Education Corner

We have a deep passion for being a part of a sustainable food supply system. We know that many consumers don't really know what that means or where to begin. Here are some links to check out.
This first link takes you to Epicurious.com and allows you to select a month and a state so that you know what is in season regardless of where you are and what time of the year it may be.
This next link is a website and blog created by a Central Illinois native who now lives in Sacramento, CA. Even though her growing season is vastly different from ours, we think her passion for food and positive energy are wonderfully contagious.
Awake At The Wisk
If you don't cook but still want to know how to contribute, this next article from pbs.com is several years old but still offers great advice on how you can be a positive contributor to a sustainable food system by becoming a "Locavore"!
