On behalf of the BioDistrict New Orleans Board of Commissioners and staff, we publish our biweekly newsletter about the plans, opportunities and activities of the BioDistrict to help the community understand the vast potential we represent.
On October 23rd, we will host our Third Annual Luncheon celebrating the post-Katrina advances made in developing another economic pillar that New Orleans can depend on for growth. As you ride around the District you will see signs of the changes we have been discussing -- seeing is believing!
We ask for your continued support of our mission, as we launch into the implementation phase of creating thousands of new, high paying jobs, better healthcare and new educational opportunities in a sustainable environment. Workforce Development Partnerships
Unprecedented leverage by the BioDistrict helped to create partnerships between employers and training providers.
One of the earliest initiatives of the BioDistrict was to organize the development of a conveyor belt style workforce development system for New Orleanians to access quality, sustainable jobs. We were able to leverage a small portion of a larger grant from Baptist Community Mission, Entergy, HCA, and others to analyze workforce demand as a result of the new hospital construction and the emerging bioscience industry. In fact, the second most important condition to develop a bioscience industry in New Orleans is the availability of a trained, skilled workforce. During industry calls, questions about workforce are in the top five following flood protection, crime and schools.

WHAT IS A WORKFORCE PARTNERSHIP?
A Workforce Partnership is a collaborative group comprised of key stakeholders that work together to meet the workforce skill needs of employers and offer best practices for training low-skilled workers for jobs within an industry sector that is critical to a region's economy. Workforce Partnerships support and enhance education, training and job placement for low-income, low-skilled unemployed adults or incumbent workers. High-quality workforce partnerships are employer-driven, innovative sector approaches to help low-wage workers succeed in the economy while also improving the competitiveness of a group of employers.
WHO ARE KEY MEMBERS OF SUCCESSFUL WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT EFFORT?
It all starts with employers and their needs. Without employer engagement in the system, nothing positive will be achieved. Next we need education providers: grammar schools, high schools, community colleges and universities to understand the look term needs of employers and train people for careers. This group includes the propriety schools and specialized providers and training programs where short term advancement needs are covered quickly.
WHERE WILL THIS TAKE PLACE?
Ideally within a centrally located clustered area to get the maximum effect. To have a central location with shared services, facilities and interaction between students, faculty and employers is the best model. In New Orleans, the ideal site would be the medical buildings around Charity and the former VA. The cluster, called the Downtown Health Campus would be anchored by an expanded Delgado School of Allied Health, a reallocated Math & Science School and shared recreation facilities available for all students including Tulane, LSU and Xavier.

Pharmaceutical Technician

A pharmaceutical technician is a health care worker who performs pharmacy related functions, generally working under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Pharmacy technicians work in a variety of locations, usually in retail and hospital pharmacies but also sometimes in long-term care facilities, pharmaceutical manufacturers, third-party insurance companies, computer software companies, government, or teaching.
Job duties include dispensing prescription drugs and other medical devices to patients and instructing on their use. They may also perform administrative duties, such as reviewing prescription requests with doctor's offices and insurance companies to ensure correct medications are provided and payment is received. Pharmaceutical technicians also speak directly with patients on the phone to aid in the awareness of taking medications on time.
Average Salary in New Orleans (As of Oct 9, 2012): $31,000.00

BioDistrict New Orleans: Harnessing university research to create new opportunities
BioDistrict recently played host to researchers and business development experts from Tufts University in Boston, MA.
The first of a series of major industry building events occurred in the latter part of September. Increasing global research collaborations part of the development of promising new joint research opportunities that can be created and financed in part by the biopharmaceutical industry. In our 2012-15 Business Plan as well as the Master Plan, we planned to add value to our member universities while supercharging new investment opportunities in New Orleans around new innovation discovered. The biopharmaceutical industry is taking notice of our activity and increasing their interest in potential investments.
The next challenge is to identify project leaders and projects that represent the best opportunities for the collaboration to get win.

- David Greenblatt demonstrated the work his lab has done on drug-drug interactions as well as some exploration of food-drug interactions.
- John Leong provided an overview of leading research in the Department of Microbiology.
- Brent Cochran spoke about the broad range of anti-cancer research at Tufts.
- Ira Herman discussed his group's efforts in wound healing and regenerative medicine. (Tulane Graduate)
- Larry Botticelli gave a brief overview of neuroscience activity at Tufts.
- Rachel Cruthirds, Assistant Vice President for Resource Development
- Tarun Mandal discussed the capabilities of his lab at drug formulation.
- Partha Bhattacharjee spoke about his work on anti-cancer compounds.
